Nail biter trying to grow nails for wedding

Jeaneen, on May 13, 2016 at 7:13 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 43

I was hoping to grow my natural nails long enough that i didnt need to add tips, but i have been unsuccessful. Im a nail biter, i did stop for a month or so, but got stressed and starting biting again. Ive been taking a "hair, skin, nails" supplement, and its been helping, but i have to figure out how to stop biting my nails. Any suggestions???

I would just give up and get tips, especially since your wedding is so close and you might get more stressed before that day.

Soak off gel mani. i broke my mom of a 50+ year nail biting habit by giving her weekly gel manis - it was MUCH harder for her to do damage if she did bite through gel, and it tasted bad. if your nails are thin and weak, gelish structure gel between color layers will also give a little additional protection and strength to the natural nail.

I don't bite my nails, but I tend to pick at them. My advice: keep a manicure set on you at all times, and make sure your nails are always smooth and filed - I find this helps me to not pick, since I like the way they look. Also, use a nail strengthener (Nail Envy or Hard as Nails are both good) and apply it often. This will keep them strong and help them grow. Also, put a pretty nail polish on and change it at least once a week - it not only protects your nails, but acts as a visual deterrent. These are all things I'm doing for my own nails, and they've really helped. Good luck!

I was a nail biter all my life until my early 20s. Not sure how I stopped to be honest. I agree with the other posters that getting a nice polish color you love and leaving it on helps you see how good they look and is an incentive to give them a break. Good luck!

Get gels. My nails suck naturally, and while I don't bite them they don't grow. This is a problem for me; my hands are in photos multiple times a weekend.

Gels will last you for at least two weeks, and you can't bite them, lol!

I was a nail biter and decided to stop a few years ago. I would paint my nails a ton at first as a reward kind of haha and would get manicures. When I'm stressed I sometimes still bite but not as crazy as before. Good luck!

I used to do that as a teenager. I broke it by nearly always having my nails painted, I didn't want to ruin them. Also, there is something you can put on them that makes them taste awful so you won't want to. I can't grow my nails either way, they're too soft. I take those kind of supplements too, my hair is doing well but nails not so much. I'm hoping I can grow them just enough that I don't want tips.

Totally agree with posters who said gel manicures. I'm not a nail biter, but gel manicures are amazing--plus, the polish bond to your nails and would be very difficult to bite. Depending on where you go, they also cost a good amount of money, so think of it that way too--as an investment that you wouldn't want to bite off!

I'm a nail biter who will stop for months than pick it back up

What helps me is to always have my nails painted (even if they look awful because they're so short) and instead of biting I'll pick off the polish- go home and paint them again. It's trading one bad habit for another but once they get long enough I stop because they look pretty... Then eventually I'll bite again. Vicious cycle

I agree with the above posters. Definitely try a gel manicure. I used to bite my nails but when I have a gel on I can't.

Ditto to all who said gel manicure. Keep them manicured until you are ready to do your wedding manicure. The second you have a chip, get it fixed, so that you aren't tempted to pick at your nails. Since your wedding is so close, I may suggest trying at home manicures. I use Essie at home. They have a grow faster base and a gel top coat. That is what I have on in the picture and I did my nails Friday or Saturday of last week.

100% in your boat. The longest I've gone is 10 days. My nails are tiny weird stumps and I'm a week out from my wedding. I'm just getting the damn tips haha.

And for future reference I'm totally going to get a gel manicure to try and curb this habit before I crack a tooth or something. I've never been a nail person, but I hate having this life long habit.

Gel manicures!! Helped me stop biting my nails, and if you find a good nail salon they will last you 2-3 weeks!

When I was in third grade, the teacher came around to our desks each day to make sure our hands were clean and nails not bitten. I never bit my nails after that.

I would imagine that teachers don't do that anymore. But, maybe you could have a friend or co-worker be your 'enforcer.'

I was seriously going to post this soon!

I'm exactly the same way as @Nicole.

I've tried gel manicures, but my bad habit has me peeling them off within a couple of days getting them. Which just makes it worse.

A couple things I am trying that are starting to show some results:

    1. I think my habit is a "need something in my mouth" thing (sex jokes, bring them on lol). So I am trying to carry gum with me and have gum or mints at my office desk, so I will chew that instead of my nails. I've noticed it is a huge problem at work by realizing my left hand (the one not using the mouse) is worse than my right lol.

    2. Nutra Nail products... I've read some good reviews and some that say the like speed growth stuff doesn't work. So I stick to the speed dry top coat. That way if I notice that I am picking at it or peeling it of f(another bad habit I have with polish. etc), I can reapply and they dry in a few seconds. This has realllly been helping me lately.

ETA: There are also polishes/things to put on your nails that taste very bad that you could try. That will be my next step if what I am doing doesn't work. Like thumb-sucking stoppers or something.
