My wedding dress is too big!!

springfever, on February 15, 2010 at 9:36 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 28

I just picked up my wedding dress the other day and it is at least 2 sizes too big. They claim it can be altered but I am so worried about it. I can't stop thinking it won't look right. It is very ornate with lace and bead work...sweetheart neckline...how can they take it in about 5 or 6 inches and it not look odd?? Please if you have any helpful advice...I would greatly appreciate it!! Thanks

Any dress too big can always be altered, just look to be paying some money to get it altered that amount.

It depends largely on the type of the dress but it is normally doable... Since it is so off i would make sure they cover at least some of the cost.

There should be no problem with having it altered, however i hope that the company you bought it from will be altering it at no charge to you?

My mom does alterations for a living and she has so many brides that have gotten there dress (from DB the most) and it is 2 sizes too big ... that is the gimic... that is where they make their money is in the alterations.. So sorry this happened... I normally help my mom with the wedding dresses and prom dresses.. cuz fliping those thing while you sew is not a one person job.. but see about getting quotes... most will not do over the phone only because.. you may think it needs one thing and it totally needs something different... Good Luck hun...

No, sadly they don't do altering there. They did give us a card of an alteration company and that's about it. Overall not a very good experience. I had my first "bridal meltdown". I felt silly but I couln't help sobbing like a little girl. Thanks for your thought everyone. I pray that I can find the best seamstress to fix it. Smiley sad

Whoa, no you don't pay for that! you ask to see the measurements they took of you when it was ordered, then contact the maker and find out what size it should've been, and raise hell to get a dress that fits! i know you only have 2 months, but i'd be kickin a$$!!! and alterations depend! one shop told me they couldn't alter a dress for a hemline, because the beading was too close to the bottom, and they were afraid they'd be liable if they messed up the beading! the beading was too close to the hem, for it to be hemmed short enough for me!

I did talk to a manager because I was pi$$ed. She got out the measurements and said they were correct. She said it was the closest for my bust. Even though it's 2 or 3 inches more than what it should be. But my waist is way off about 5 inches or so. I think they were just trying to cover their butts.

That is horrible. I'm sorry this is happening. I don't have any helpful information. However, I now think we all go through that (at least) one meltdown, crying like a little girl. I did that tonight after finding out the venue I wanted booked another event after I was told something that appearently isn't correct and stopped us from booking back in Oct. already.

So you are not alone on the mistake parts.. It's very irritating and in your situation with the dress I'd be very very upset and demanding them to pay whomever to fix your dress..

The dress is top of the list compared to the venue. Omgosh I'd be soo mad.

If I can get this to work. This is a pic of my dress. You can see how hard it will be to alter. http://www.karelinasposa.com/bridal/c7805.htm

It can be altered, you just need to go to someone who alters wedding dresses and not just your local alteration shop. My cousin bought her dress from a trunk show and it was lace and beading detailed; must have been 3 sizes too big. She found a good seamstress who was able to alter her dress and it fit her perfectly! They even placed a bra and corset in the dress. Of course, she ended up paying a hefty amount.. but it all depends on the dress. Where are you located? I can refer you to the shop if you live in Houston!

Your dress is absolutely wonderful!! You are going to need to find an EXPERIENCED BRIDAL seamstress. I have spent many years doing bridal alterations and the rule of thumb was that a gown could be taken in SUCCESSFULLY up to 4 sizes - depending on the dress. Generally speaking when your measurements are taken the dress is ordered to fit the largest measurement because it is always easier to take in than let out. Many bridal fabrics will retain needle marks if they are let out. Sometimes you can get the marks out but if the dress is silk they will never come out completely.

If the bust area is 2"-3" too big that would translate to taking in 1" - 1 1/2" on each side - completely doable. The waist 5" or 2 1/2" on each side - again completely doable.

If the dress had been ordered a size smaller you would have to have it taken in a little less but the charge w(s)hould be the same.

Research seamstresses - get references - ask to see their work or photos of dresses they have altered.

If they won't order you a new dress I would insist that they cover the alterations. I'm not a pro, but I would be afraid to make even the tiniest alteration to that dress. I agree with Soon2B, get your measurements and contact the maker.

This shouldn't be a problem. I had a dress similar to yours that I found off the rack from a store that went out of business - it was $84.00 and too good a deal to pass up, even if it was too big. If your place won't cover the new dress/ alterations make sure you find an experienced seamstress (preferably one that you can get thru a personal recommendation and with experience in wedding dresses) - she should be able to take care of it for you.

I would ask them if they can get thr right size in intime for any possible alterations OR if they will cover at least 50% of the alterations..

Thanks for all the great advice. We contacted a personally recommended seamstress today. She has 30 years experience with bridal alterations. She said that she can fix it without any problems. WOW I am so relieved!! I still don't think I will be able to completely relax until I see it with my own eyes though. It looks like things could be heading in the right direction atleast.
