Staci, on December 30, 2010 at 2:25 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

Hey ladies..my husband has no children and I have 3 ages 19,13, &9. Yes (lol). Well he really really wants a baby and honestly I never thought or dreamed of having anymore. I have looked into the prices and picked up my medical records. Has anyone every went through this procedure or know anyone that has?

I had a neighbor that had three kids by her 1st husband, had her tubes tied and then had them untied (?) when her second husband wanted kids of their own. I don't know the details (I was 16 when all this was going on) but I know they had a little boy and then a year or so later a little girl both happy and healthy.

My mom had a reversal several years ago. I seem to remember quite a bit of downtime after the surgery though. It was a succesful reversal but her and her husband split-up a year after the surgery and never ended up having any children. The doctors said that all was functioning properly though

Honestly, I don't mind. I would love to be able to give him his first child.

My FH and I have been talking about the same thing. I had my tubes tied after I had my son 7 years ago. We both have children, but he wants one together. I have done some research regarding tubal ligation reversal and also in vitro. I'm not sure if we will go through with either one but it does give us hope if we do choose to go forward.

@ Staci my doctor tried to convince me not to get it done. He told me I was too young and I only had 2 kids. I didn't want to listen and now look at me. lol

Whether a reversal is possible depends on part on how the original tubal ligation was done. Certain ways of doing it are most effective, but also hardest to reverse. You might want to talk to the doctor who did it about the likelihood of being able to reverse it.

2d Bride took the words out of my mouth (or letters off my keyboard as the case may be.) It really does all depend on how it was done to determine how easily it will be do undo it. Talk with your doc and get the info from him/her first, then go from there.

When I had my tubes tied, my doctor told me that a reversal is very dangerous, not guaranteed and no insurance will pay for it.

Frankly, you are better doing invitro. It's going to be cheaper and easier on your body than one of the most dangerous surgeries you can have.

I'd recommend against a reversal. I'd look at other options- because they are safer and cheaper and the end result is the same.

HONESTLY, I have 2 children by my first husband and 1 by FH, I was so young when I had them all I thought I had no choice by to get my tubes tied b/c NO other form of BC seemed to work.. we have always known we wanted one more child but not until we were able to handle another one. We know it will cost a ton but if/when we're willing to pay then we're willing to add the respociblity!

I am in the same situation....I have three kids ages 14, 9, and 4 and FH has 0 and we really want to have a (1) baby. My tubal can be reversed (YAY) and FH is fertile (YAY). I have checked around the Atlanta area to compare the prices of the tubal reversal and IVF. Lakeshore tubal reversal center only deal with reversals and they also test the tubes to make sure they are open (a lot of docs don't do that) and down time is about 2-3 days and their cost is $6,900 for everything

IVF is a series of doctors visits and hormone meds and a BIG chance for multiples and the average cost is $10-12K PER cycle and you may need more than 1 cycle

It all depends on what will work best for you and your Hubby.

If you decide to go with the reversal make sure your hubby get a fertility test because you don't want to have the surgery for nothing.

We plan to have the surgery a month after the wedding.

    Good Luck!!

I had 2 kids and my FH has one. I had my tubes tied after my second child while I was married to my second husband. We both agreed at that time two kids was enough for us. Now, 7 years later my FH and I have talked about having more from getting reversal to in vitro which both procedures are too pricey for us, plus insurance will not cover either one. We're both 37 with one 17 year old almost out of the house and an 11 year old with at least 7 more years at home. We have decided we will just raise the two we have and wait on the grandbabies to make their appearances at the right time. Smiley smile

My mom had her tubes tied and when my parents split up my mom got remarried and her and my step dad wanted to have a baby so they did invitro but it didn't work. Chances are it was for the best because after she turned 40 she had to have an emergency historectomy. (sorry if I spelled it wrong) She now has 2 grandchildren and gets to help take care of them.

I not only had my tubes tied I had the ablasion surgery. My DH has no children and has said he wouldn't mind someday having one. Well, pregnancy for me would be uber dangerous for both a baby and myself. SO, our options are surogacy or adoption. I have three children 8,6 and 5. So we decided we'd get a dog. Good luck!

My fh wants a baby and I do too I ahve 2 daughters 17 and 10 and I ahd my tubes tied when my youngest was one a decision I made hastily because of things that were happening in my marriage and I surely regret it so I went to a specialist and he said if the tubes were burned then they would cut that part out and reattach them but the most effective would be just to do invitro but it will be all out of pocket because no insurance pays for a reversal or invitro if you had your tubes tied Smiley sad

Just curious but how can you do invitro if your tubes are tied and you don't get it reversed? Does it mean by having your tubes tied that you just can't get pregnant naturally but if you do invitro they basically plant the fertilized egg in there which would not be able to get there naturally? Not that any of this applies to me, I'm just curious :-)

@ Mrs.Kuroyama- They harvest several follicles with the aid of fertility drugs and then extract the eggs (surgically), then they fertilize them, let them grow/divide a few days and implant them just as they would with any other in-vitro procedure. Sometimes a tubal ligation can't be reversed because of the way it was done, so this option is open to those who are good candidates/have the $$$.

To anyone considering surgical sterilization after you have children, get your DH to have a vasectomy, it is less dangerous and in most cases easier (and less dangerous) to reverse if you later decide you want another child.
