My non invited family members are inviting themselves to my wedding. Help!

Alejandra, on February 12, 2020 at 6:57 PM Posted in Planning 0 13

I'm getting married in November in a beach in Mexico. My fiancé and I live in Los Angeles.

My wedding will be very intimate, a max of 60 people.

So far my guest list is complete and almost all invited guests are attending.

I just found out that some of my family members that were not invited are planning on coming with all of their family, for example one of them is bringing 8 total guests. They didn't tell me directly, I heard this from my mother because they called her to tell her: "see you at the wedding". I never sent them an invitation or invited them verbally, they are basically inviting themselves. These are family members that I'm not very close to. I did invite all my close family.

Not sure what to do. I don't want my wedding to turn into a mess. Any advice?

Thank you!

Reach out to them and say that you've already sent out invitations and although you wish you could've invited more, you want an intimate ceremony and/or only have the budget for a small group of people, or you're at the guest maximum for a venue (assuming your having dinner or reception elsewhere.) That's super unfortunate. I can't believe how rude people can be to just invite themselves!

This, and also tell your venue that you’re concerned people who were not invited may show up, and then they can be the bad guys and send them away

Thanks Angel, I'm going to have to reach out to them individually and explain this.

Do you suggest waiting until the wedding day is closer?

I would probably do it ASAP. Since it is in Mexico, you don't want anyone who wasn't invited to start making travel plans and what not!

I thought about having security, but I really want to prevent uninvited guests from even showing up to the venue. I don't want to be rude and turn people away.

Would you expect them to cause problems when turned away? If not, I think if you talk to your venue and have them taking care of it would be enough

OMG. Do you know how they even found out the logistics? I would reach out to them and explain your plan was to have a smaller wedding and just close family. I'd also reach out to those invited and let them know not to share so much. It's not a secret wedding but it's not for everyone who isn't invited to know all the details.

I would reach out to the people who rudely invited “extras” and explain to them that there are no plus ones (or plus eights!!) being given to your wedding, and let them uninvite them. Maybe it would be easier for the people who extended the invitation to retract it and explain to them they had made a mistake?

Did your mom say anything to them when they called? Or did she not know they weren't invited? These people do need to be told right away so they don't travel. If you're stressed out about confronting these people, maybe your mom can help?

My mom didn’t know what to say to them, she said she was in shock. It’s getting to a point that I’m thinking of changing my wedding date without telling anyone, otherwise I might end up with double the guest list.

Thanks Chrysta, I don’t know who gave them all the details. Will need to investigate. My guess is that they heard we are getting married and automatically thought they were invited. Maybe is more of a cultural tradition that all family is gets invited in Mexico, that’s what my mom thinks.

Are you friends with all these people on social media? Maybe you could make a post stating that you would love to invite everyone in your life, but unfortunately due to venue restrictions you will be very limited in the number of invitations you are able to extend.
