Mother of bride/groom - Do they have to match the wedding party?

My thought is no, and we will most likely not have any pictures with the wedding party and our parents. Here are my bridesmaid dresses, we are doing mismatched colors and styles. My mom found a pretty navy dress that she'd like to order and is asking if she would look too out of place. I am just worried about things looking sloppy because they are TOO mismatched. FH's mom will most likely wear tan/plum, and my stepmom(ster) will wear a color that neither of them are wearing.

Thoughts?

That dress is gorgeous! I believe moms should wear whatever they feel comfortable in.

No, they don't have to match the wedding party. The navy dress is nice. It won't look out of place or sloppy. If that's the dress mom wants then go for it.

My mom and FMIL are not matching the wedding party. I let them choose whatever color and dress they felt comfortable in.

I like your mom's dress a lot! No, they don't need to match, and I don't think the dress she wants will clash at all, it may not be the same color but it is within the same color family and I bet it will look great

My mom matches somewhat, her's is a Greyish blue gown (BP is in dark navy tuxes and indigo blue dresses), FMIL picked an eggplantish dress. Not sure how it'll all "go" but at this point who cares.

I didn't request my Mom or MIL match the wedding party. But I did advise that they may want to wear softer colors due to the fact that the guys suits were a lighter color. But ultimately I left it up to them what they wanted to wear.
