Moissanite or Diamond Ring Engagement Ring?

Tomi, on June 12, 2020 at 11:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 53

I found this engagement ring with moissanite. It is one carat and looks luxurious. What do you think about moissanite instead of a diamond?

+ Lower cost than diamonds

+ looks like a diamond

- it's not a diamond

My engagement ring is moissanite because I wanted an economical diamond. I’m in love with it. And I don’t have to worry about my FH breaking the bank. Plus it’s way easier to upgrade.

Thank you! I think so too. In addition, I read that if moissanite is really high-quality then it is very difficult to distinguish from a diamond.

Yes and no. Moissanites are beautiful and a great alternative to diamonds. However, the way the gem reflects/refracts light is different from a diamond, so the way it sparkles is going to be different from the way diamonds sparkle (neither is better or worse, just different). If you want the diamond sparkle without the natural diamond price, high quality lab grown diamonds are also a good option. https://www.brilliantearth.com/news/moissanite-vs-diamond/#:~:text=moissanite%20has%20a%20refractive%20index,is%20higher%20than%20a%20diamond.&text=the%20white%20light%20reflected%20back,is%20referred%20to%20as%20dispersion.

I’m in love with my moissanite! it is economical, ethically sourced, and just as beautiful (if not more) as all the rest of stones I have seen! Here’s mine, I have had it one year already and become more obsessed with it every day lol Moissanite or Diamond Ring Engagement Ring? 3

For its price and its resemblance to a diamond, moissanite all the way. No one is going to stare at your ring to see if it sparkles correctly.

This is 100% about what you want/love and nothing else. However, sometimes it's important to a bride that people "not really be able to tell" if it's a diamond or not. In that circumstance, I do think the larger the stone, the less likely people are to think it is a diamond. If that's not a concern, then like with any other piece of jewelry or accessory, it's really just personal preference -- color, cut, size -- it's whatever you like!

I have a diamond, it was just what I preferred. I think the biggest thing I have heard about moissanite is to choose it because you want it, not because you want it to "pass" for a diamond. It seems like the people who become unhappy with having it don't become unhappy because "people can tell it's not a diamond," but rather, they that aren't completely comfortable that it is not a diamond. Choose what you love!

I understood your point. Is it possible to say that 1 carat is a lot? This ring seemed to me rather delicate.

There's all different levels of lab grown diamonds, from cheap looking CZs to super higher quality that are indistinguishable from mined diamonds (the chemical composition is the same, it's just that pressure applied to the carbon was done so in a laboratory rather than over time by nature). Lab grown diamonds can still be obtained for cheaper than mined diamonds, but they are still a bit more expensive than moissanite. Again, this is only if you specifically want a diamond. Stone type is totally preference, so if you prefer the look of moissanite over diamond, then go for it! Diamonds really only became "the" engagement ring stone because the De Beers company had a really good marketing department post World War II. Also, if cost is a concern, search for off-size stones. For instance, a .90 carat diamond will be a lot cheaper than a 1 carat diamond even though the physical size won't look that much smaller. When you go to half (.5 carats) or whole, there is a larger price increase that is not directly equal to the size increase (compare similar quality diamonds that are .8 and .9 carats compared to the price difference for .9 and 1 carat stones). This is generally true across precious stones (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, etc.). At the end of day, as long as you love it, that's the stone/ring for you, regardless of what it is or how much it cost.
