Mixing Fabrics for Bridesmaids Dresses?

Shannon, on September 17, 2012 at 12:08 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

What is the opinion on mixing fabrics for bridesmaids dresses?

I originally had all my girls in satin dresses that looked great on all their figures. After ordering the dresses and having them arrive, one of my bridesmaids found out she is pregnant and will be due about a month and a half after my wedding. I have heard two different stories from two different David's Bridals- one said that the original choice ordered a few sizes too big would work fine, the other said a different style would be more comfortable for fitting around her belly without a lot of alteration.

There is a dress in chiffon at DB that is recommended as a maternity appropriate dress, it fits more loosely and is less form fitting than the satin. My question is, will it look tacky to have the two different fabrics?

No it would not look tacky just because of different materials.

I was 8 months pregnant and wearing a a satin dress. If you go with satin, it can be altered to fit her belly, if she's short. Which is why we could alter my dress to fit me.

I think it would look fine. I personally didn't want to do different fabrics cause the color might be a little different, but I have seen pictures where bridesmaids are wearing different fabrics/colors and I thought it looked fine Smiley smile

I do think you can see the difference with different materials.

I say go to the store and see the same colors in different materials next to each other.

Satin and chiffon look very different next to each other. One is shiny and the other is the total opposite. I don't think it's tacky to mix fabrics but you'll definitely be able to see the difference so it depends on how you feel about that.

I was just in a wedding a few weeks ago where we all wore satin and a girl who was pregnant wore chiffon, it looked 100% okay. She was more comfortable and was really flattering for her belly. The satin may likely show her belly button and that wouldn't be flattering for her.

I wish I had a picture to show you but they haven't received them yet and I didn't take any myself.

I would stick with the same fabrics. You can use different styles and colors, but fabrics must be the same or it looks tacky

I think it will be fine, my 4 bms wore different fabrics, 1 wore silk, 2 wore taffetta, and the other chiffon. I think they still looked great because the colors matched.

I'm allowing my girls to pick their dresses, but they have to be the same color. I think it will look fine in the different fabrics, as any differences should be minimal, and it's not like the dresses are going to be completely different colors (blue and green, for example). They'll be the same color, just different fabrics, and possibly with a slight shade variation.

I think it's fine to mix fabrics. But I wonder if it would be a good idea to have another maid in chiffon also, to balance it out? Otherwise, pregnant bridesmaid may look like the odd one out

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I had planned on them all being in the same color. I am getting mixed reviews on whether or not chiffon will look different in pictures. Does anyone have any pictures of mixed fabrics?
