Hi everyone!

I'm looking to have my bridesmaids (1 MOH 5 maids) do mismatched dresses for my wedding. I see so many pictures on Pinterest, as well as real-life in recent weddings, that I adore the style of. I like the idea of each maid choosing her own dress - it could be from Target or Davids Bridal or whatever.. as long as it's a certain tone (I'm thinking maroon/burgundy), long, and not too flashy.

Has anyone done something similar? Do you think I should have each maid show me their dress before they buy it? Anything else I should think of before telling my maids to start looking?

I did something similar to @Kate with Azazie except mine are in recency. I definitely agree with picking a store and a fabric because different fabrics take dyes differently. Obviously, I don't have pictures yet but here are the dresses my girls chooseç

We'll be doing Azazie as well. I just told them to choose any knee length dress in Dark Navy and to avoid satin. I think unless you are choosing a rather neutral color, you need to at least specify a designer.

I didn't for mine but the wedding I was in recently we did. We went with Azazie in dusty rose. Same color. Different styles

My brothers sister is doing the same thing same color. It's working out great. She just asked to see the final dress the girls chose...

Just to make sure no one looked just "out there"

I told all my girls "white lace, above the knee" and let them pick their own. Each of them sent me a picture of it before they bought to make sure it was okay, and they all picked beautiful dresses.

My girls are wearing an "Infinity Dress" from DCDress on esty- all the same color and same skirt, but they can style the top any way that they want! And they were very affordable!

I have bridesmaids of different heights and shapes so I selected David's Bridal, floor length, chiffon, and in the apple color (with the exception of my MOH who her dress is in satin to make her stand out a bit). I kept it to one store and material so that the shade of red looked the same for their dresses. I took each bridesmaid individually and spent some 1 on 1 time with them at the salon for them to select their dresses. I wanted them to wear something they'd feel comfortable in to dance and stand in all day Smiley smile

@Kate every time I see your picture I'm dying to ask-- WHICH azazie color is that?? It's beautiful!

To actually advise re: the question-- I've seen this work and I've seen this miss. I think the "same color from the same store" route is always a good one but I understand that might not be your goal with this plan. Ones that mossed the mark WERE too flashy or...varied from each other, like everyone looked like they were going to a separate type of event -- a couple people too casual, a couple people TOO formal , so I think trying to give some kind of good direction to formality would be helpful , or a couple of fabric suggestions.

The negative story I've seen is someone gave their girls CHAMPAGNE and one girl got such a flashy dress I could NOT tell from pictures who the bride was without actually knowing. Some of the girls' "champagnes" were dark and some looked almost totally white :l

I am going to be completely honest with you - I hate this idea!!! However, I DO want my girls to wear different dress styles, but same color and length, and from the same designer. I also like the idea of choosing a few different colors (that are incorporated in the wedding colors though) but same idea as what I mentioned earlier. I have just been to weddings where the bm's were allowed to choose their own dress and you never know what you are going to get - you could easily end up with some wearing something on the dressier side and then some wearing too casual. I have also seen where they were supposed to all wear cream - and ended up with white, cream, tan.... and brown.... like wtf? Lol but anyways it looked terrible in my opinion. HOWEVER this is my opinion you do you! This is YOUR big day - not mine!!!!

I just recommend giving some direction - like same fabric, same color (or mix of your color scheme if you want), same length, etc.

Also, I was in a wedding where the bride initially asked us to find our own and it was a nightmare! Most people WANT you to tell them what to wear for something like this, all the other bm's (7 of us) wanted the bride to tell us what to wear instead of just figuring it out on our own - and the bride ended up picking dresses and it was so much easier!

I had a very hard time choosing what I wanted for BM dresses and we ended up all one color same dress. For about 2 months leading up to the wedding I was so bummed because I wish I did mismatch in some sense...but when it came to the day of they all looked great and it didn't even cross my mind!

Just give them general guidelines and have them send pics and options to you before buying. You can make it work! My ladies were super happy with the process.

I did "any long chiffon dress from Azazie in mulberry". It worked well. Everyone was comfortable and it looked nice together.

I LOVE this idea and am planning to do the same with my wedding in July. My MOH will be in Navy blue (she picked) and my bridesmaids will be picking between yellow or burgundy. It is rather stressful because they aren't progressing with their dress picking (or even color picking) like I want them to! Maybe you can/will have better luck with it!

We are doing the same thing @Kate did. I wanted the different tones, but couldn't find shades that worked with my colors. I love that idea, so if it works, I say go for it. I love seeing the different personalities of the BMs come out a little bit!

I plan to find a swatch I like and let mine choose. I have one moh and bridesmaid, so it'll just look like I wanted the moh to stand out if they're different.
