Migraines

Cassidy, on September 10, 2017 at 7:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 50

Does anybody get migraines? I've had some for three days haven't been able to get rid of them. I'm just terrified I'm going to have this awful migraine on my wedding day. I haveI have a neurologist who prescribed me something but it only works about 50% of the time. And it's of exorbitantly expensive.

What did he prescribe? Migraine meds shouldn't be exorbitantly expensive. You need to tell him that and he'll prescribe something else if indicated. You really should discuss this with your neurologist as no one here knows the cause of your migraines or your medical history.

Hey Cassidy, I am a fellow migraine sufferer.

For preventatives, I would advise lots of leafy greens in your diet, stay hydrated, and you can supplement with magnesium as well. You might also want to try going gluten free for the month leading up to your wedding. Gluten is an inflammatory property in foods and cutting it out might help with your pain.

If you wake up with a migraine, take your meds right away. This is your wedding day!! Don't be brave. Keep hydrated, keep hydrated, keep hydrated.

Definitely try to get in to see your neuro before your wedding day. I have imitrex (migraine abortive) to take as needed as well as zofran (anti nausea meds). The combo has worked well for me.

    Sending prayers!

@Elizabeth - I take Imitrex and it is not cheap. The cost for Imitrex oral tablet 25 mg is around $268 for a supply of 9 tablets, depending on the pharmacy you visit. Prices are for cash paying customers only and are not valid with insurance plans.

ETA: They bill my insurance company over $600 for the same 9 pills.

@Elizabeth My migraine prevention medicine isn't expensive, but the medicine I take when I get a migraine is. When I haven't met my deductible it's about $54/pill...I consider that expensive.

@Cassidy You should definitely see your neurologist if your medicine isn't working.

@justkidding sometimes I can do an advocare spark and the caffeine and b vitamin burst can kick them without meds!

My migraines have a different route (post concussion syndrome and repeated injury of the neck) but I can still tell you what I do. Meditation when I feel it coming up, neutriptolyene (an antidepressant also perscribed for pain), staying hydrated, and icing the back of my head when it gets bad.

Maxalt mlt is the only thing that helps me. I dissolve it and then wash it down with a huge iced coffee or coke. I get the generic when I haven't met my deductible. Go to the good rx app to compare prices once you have your script- they also have coupons.

This isn't recommended for regular use and I am not a doctor in any way. but I have a tens device (the tingly thing that they use if you've ever been to PT or a chiropractor) and use it on a very very low frequency on my forehead and back of my neck. That always helps

I take rizatriptan and nortriptlaine to prevent them. I do see a neurologist and will try to call on Monday. I was mostly looking for support. The antidepressants are cheap- but the abortive rizatriptan or maxalt is like 425 bucks for 9 pills. I took it and chugged some coffee but it's only helping so much. Thank you.

I also take rizatriptan to stop them, and recently my neurologist prescribed flovatriptan, if needed (it's stronger). I haven't had to try it yet. I'm also nervous of this, since they are so debilitating, but the rizatriptan (maxalt) works for me, for the most part. My insurance is pretty solid, I pay $10 for 12 pills. I've tried Imitrex in the past but it makes me shaky. Also plenty of water, sleep and some caffeine. Sometimes a combo of 1 aleve with the rizatriptan helps.

Have you tried the generic of imitrix? I can get 9 pills for $20.

Not cheap but Botox has done wonders for me.

I used to get crippling migraines and it turns out they were stress related! My doc prescribed me two types of meds depending on the severity. Wish I could remember what (this was 3 years ago) but perhaps they're stress related? I just talked with my regular doc

I think my prescription pill is expensive (my insurance covers most of it though, I believe it is called Cambia). When I feel one coming on, I take excedrin migraine, put an ice pack on my head and get some caffeine.

Also, I woke up on my wedding day with a migraine at 5:30 am. And realized I forgot my meds back at my house. Made a make shift ice pack with a zip lock bag and the ice machine and laid down for an hour. After that didn't work, me and a bridesmaid drove to my house (only 15-20 min away from venue) and got my meds. Went away by 8 am.

I have a friend who gets severe migraines and Botox worked for her too.

The only thing that would work for me sometimes was regular excedrin. I don't really get them too often anymore though. Hope you can stay migraine-free on your wedding day.

Everyone has different triggers. If you know yours avoid it if you can. I can't take anything preventative but mine if a good trigger. I also see a chiropractor and that has reduced the intensity of them. This is also my biggest fear on the big day.

I have an appointment tomorrow- but this is becoming an issue. I take preventatives and they work but I've been getting migraines at the same time of day for the past week. Glad to know I'm not alone. I just want them to stop.

Imitirex can vary a lot in price depending on your insurance. I use it as a last resort. Someone told me about peppermint oil and though I was initially skeptical I swear by it now, Have a small roller applicator in my purse. Put it on your third eye (kind of between your eyes, above the bridge of your nose). I use a combo of water to prevent and caffeine when it happens, decongestant as sometimes I have a sinus headache component, cold packs if I can get away for a few minutes. I think you have to go with what works for you since it's so different for everyone. Try to vary your treatment routine until you have one that works.

Can you meet with your neurologist before the wedding to talk about the price of what you're currently on and express concerns about a migraine on your wedding day?

I take Migrelief and it really helps with prevention. I used to take Topamax, but I knew someone who got a brain tumor from it so I kicked that real quick. I take Imitrex a few times a month (yes it can be that outrageously expensive) and probably have to go to the ER about once every year or two and get an IV mixture of toradol, reglan, benadryl, and zofran.

I take treximet which is a tri-triptan so it targets the blood vessels right away. It's 1,056 for 9 pills, but under my moms insurance it costs $25. My own insurance doesn't cover any of it.
