Micro-wedding Advice & Venue Ideas in md

Jessica, on July 29, 2025 at 1:39 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

Hi!
We’re currently trying to plan a micro-wedding and would love any input or ideas especially from those who’ve pulled something similar off!

I’m honestly not opposed to a courthouse wedding, but my fiance’s family is huge, and even after trimming the guest list, we’re still at about 30 people (17 with just immediate family..). That pretty much maxes out most courthouse limits and pushes us into small venue territory and with a tight budget, we are having a hard time trying to plan.

This is what we would like to do..

  • - We want a quick ceremony (we’re not into being the center of attention, it makes us anxious).

  • - After the Ceremony, we’d love to do something simple like a pretzel bar, some desserts, drinks, and just hang out with everyone. Maybe even a fire pit.. smores..something like that!

  • - We’re going for more of a BBQ-style vibe where everyone can just eat, chat, drink, and relax.

  • - We’re trying to keep things very low-key, with a budget of around $2–3k max.

  • - I'd love to plan as little as possible, or keep it to the bare minimum. I don't mind needing to do the decor, bringing a bluetooth speaker or anything like that. But, I don't want to have to coordinate every single thing.

Has anyone else done something like this? Any affordable venue recommendations in Maryland where we could pull off something casual like this for 40ish people? We’re open to parks or anything outdoors really (we are BIG outdoor people), old buildings, distilleries etc.. and would like to have our wedding sometime in October.

Thanks so much in advance! I really appreciate any help or ideas!

Hi! Your wedding sounds VERY similar to what we're doing in March.

We decided on a bar that's nearby because they have a super cute outdoor patio where they have live bands, play movies, do Salsa nights, and other fun activities. Which means I don't have to worry about seating (renting chairs, tables, or seating charts), no cost for reserving the backyard area, accessible bathrooms, and lighting and decorations are already part of their decor. They also can use our spotify playlist so no band or dj costs. Any bbq spots or other restaurants with an outdoor area near you that might be able to accommodate? A food truck might be another option but keep in mind their costs vary A LOT from what I've seen.
We are doing simple glazed donuts instead of a cake or cupcakes. I've seen tips about hiring photographers and/or a baker from a local college. They need the experience for their portfolios and can be much cheaper than the pros. We're going to do Polaroids on the tables instead.
Guest-wise, you may want to ask that there are no plus ones and/or no kids to help keep the costs down.

Hi Jessica! Me and my best friend both were recently engaged and so I’ve had fun looking into all different options. As soon as you mentioned BBQ, I knew I had to let you know about one that I found. Founding Farmers offers different catering menus, and they have a Backyard BBQ one that’s $35 per person, with a minimum 20 people order. It offers two bread options, two meat options, and three sides. And Founding Farmers is delicious if you’ve not been! They have them in DC, so it should be doable for Maryland if they don’t have any locations there. In terms of venues, if you’re good with super casual, a lot of local parks allow you to rent out their pavilions (the picnic tables, usually under some type of open air covering). Not sure where in MD you are, but Howard County has a lot, they range from like $175 to $1025 (for the really nice Centennial Park Pavilion H one - but that park has multiple to choose from that are smaller too!). Obviously since they have picnic tables you won’t need to worry about rentals. For a little bit fancier, a lot of breweries have affordable options! Hope this helps some!
