Mermaid Dress for Short Brides

Minako, on December 19, 2011 at 2:26 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 6

So I really like the mermaid dress, but I was told that it makes short people look short. The reason for that is that it flares out way below the knees so makes it look like you have short legs. I can kind of see the logic in that, but wanted to know if you guys thought so? I am also considering the princess/fit-and-flare style.

I think it'd be fine! A few websites say:

If You're Petite look for: Trumpet, sheath, and modified A-line gowns. Find a style with a waistline above your natural waist, to make the lower half of the dress (and therefore you) appear longer. The fabric is up to you―you can pull off a high sheen. But the detailing should be small (no huge bows) and limited to the bodice, to draw the eye upward.

I say wear what makes you feel GORGEOUS!

I will say my SIL is about 4'11 and wore a mermaid halter...it did not flatter her at all. Made her look wider and shorter. Even still, try it on and see how it looks on you!

Different dresses in different styles look different on individual people, if that makes sense. One trumpet or mermaid might look awful, but that does not mean that every single one will look awful. Try on a few and see what you like. I personally did not like the way drop waist trumpet dresses looked on me, because the drop waist made my legs look shorter and the elongated torso look was not flattering. But I've seen a few petite brides look great in those.

Don't rule out the mermaid/trumpet just yet!

I'm 5'3" (with the shoes I wore for the day, I was 5'6") My dress was a mermaid/trumpet style, and if anything I felt like I looked taller in it than I did in the big poofy ball gowns that were wider than I am tall. My advice would be to try on several different silhouettes just to see what you like best. Don't narrow yourself to one thing or another until you've tried some of everything on.

I do agree with Pan X about the drop waist making legs look shorter, I tried on a few and they made me look dis-proportioned. Also, some designers make some or all of their dresses in "petite" sizes, which would be proportioned to your height better.

Thanks for your responses. They're helpful. I've tried various dress styles and am more torn than ever! Lol. I like a few different styles but have yet to find the dress that's completely perfect in all aspects. But I don't think the mermaid dress is the way to go for me, unless I find that perfect mermaid one that doesn't make my legs short. Thanks guys!

Minako. Don't listen to what people say. I finally ordered my dress and I went with the Mermaid/ Trumpet dress. I am 4'11 and it works perfect for me. It makes my torso look much longer than what it really is. The ball gowns looked and felt like it swallowed me whole. I looked at dresses on line before I started my search so I knew what was out there and what I really want. Good luck on you selection :-)
