Menu cards, are they necessary?

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about menu cards, are you using them or not?

We are not doing it. Menu selections will be on the RSVP cards (our meal is played). We are however placing a Thank you note at each place setting. I found it somewhere on line. It will be roughly $30 for Vista Print to print the 65 we need, so I'm going for it.

Nope, not doing them. We're having a buffet service. No need to spend the extra $$ on them with this set up.

We didn't do menu cards, but we had cards showing what was in each dish set up on the buffet, with the ingredients to accommodate any food allergens. I had two people say thank you for doing that, it made it so they didn't have to track down a staff person to inquire about EVERY dish, if it was something they could eat - they could read the card and make the determination for themselves.

Our caterer did that free of (additional) cost. They normally place cards with a very general descriptor - ie "Green salad" where as ours said "Green salad, spinach, arugula, cucumbers and tomato with a lemon drizzle."

I am on the fence. I initially say no. I then find myself imagining guest asking the servers again and again "what are we eating?", "what's in it?". I think to avoid this I may have one per table. I only have 4 tables at my wedding(small wedding). In other words I'm thinking if it won't break the bank do one per table. Hope this helps!

If you decide you want to do them, you could just DIY one per table and print them at home. That's what I plan on doing.

We didn't have them. We didn't want to spend money on them. The waiters asked everyone what they wanted. We had no problems.

For table side choice I think it's a nice touch. For a buffet I think a sign by the buffet is sufficient. If the buffet is not staffed by servers but is completely self serve I would want a sign at each dish.

Thanks everyone, I have an extra box of invitations I'm not using, so I think I'll print one or two for each table. It's not buffet but not exactly plated either, so I'm leaning towards printing a few so they can know ahead of time before reaching the food station.

We did not use them. We had a plated meal where everyone was served a combo (both steak & crab cake) so there were no choices to be made

I'm going to get them (I'm actually thinking of getting those cute mini-books from minted as a combo program/menu/info card) - but we're having a taco cart cater our wedding, so we want people to know their options before they get up to the cart and "order." I also want my vegetarian guests to know what their options are, so menu cards will be useful there also.

I think that we are just going to write the menu on a big chalkboard at each food station that we have. Save money and paper!

I wouldn't say necessary but we had a huge buffet and it helped people know what each item was. I think if you have a server at each station or something like that then no.
