Menu cards, are they necessary?

Elaine , on October 8, 2015 at 7:32 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 3 36

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about menu cards, are you using them or not?

I won't be using them. Guest are making their meal selection when they RSVP.. So I see no need for them. I will also have the meal options listed on my website on the events page

I think it depends on the kind of dinner you have. If your caterer wants a menu choice indicator on their place card, then probably not. But if they're ordering through waitstaff at the reception, then probably. Ask your caterer how they want to organize dinner and meal choices before deciding on if you need a card or not.

Nope. Waste of money in my opinion.

I got them. I had a buffet so it was more for decor reason. I used rack cards from Vista Print. I got 100 for $15 dollars.

I would. Even if it is just one per table. In this world of allergies and food sensitivities, instead of having your guests ask you or your wait staff, they can just look and see what they are eating.

If you decide not to have them, just make sure your buffet is somehow labeled or there is somebody that will tell people what they are eating. We were at a wedding where there was delicious food, but I have no idea what I ate till now Smiley smile

We're doing them, but the caterer is including it in their package. If they didn't include it, I probably wouldn't end up doing it.

We are having a seated dinner at both the rehearsal dinner and reception. We will have menu cards for both.

We are having them. We are having a seated dinner where guests will order with waitstaff. Just more paper product for me to design (I secretly love it).

I will be posting a sign describing the entrees but we are having a seated and served meal that people are rsvping with their choice. Anyone we invite with food allergies can contact us for details. And RD the restraurant is providing a menu as our guests will have a choice that evening.

I think its nice for the guests, but I think they are a giant waste of money. I think the guests can wait a few extra minutes to see what will be served. I would suggest adding it to your wedding website (if you're doing one) instead of menu cards.

We are not having them. It's just another expense that seems unnecessary at this point. It's not saving us THAT much but hey, every little bit helps.

If you want an alternative you could also make a sign or put little tent cards out (if you're having a buffet). I personally don't think they're necessary, but could be a nice touch if they don't take to much time or cost too much money.

Doesn't have to be a chalkboard, but could look something like this if you wanted - http://pixel.brit.co/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/chalkboardcolor-645x967.jpg

I am not using them. We are having a buffet, but with waitstaff to serve guests so I figure they can answer any questions.

Depends on the type of wedding you're having. Elegant plated dinner, then, yes! buffet style, not so much however a nice chalkboard theme would be nice just to let them know what's being served.

I think we'll probably do them, but only because I've come across some really good deals. I probably won't have one for every seat either, maybe every-other seat at each table. Also, we're having a plated dinner with several courses. I think it's different if you're planning on having a buffet dinner.

I was going to do them, but then I put our entire menu on our website. Our venue only gives us one official option (and a vegetarian and kids choice) so since guests can't choose I wanted them to know ahead of time what was being served so they could let us know if they had any restrictions. Once I did that I decided there wasn't much point in menu cards other than for decor. I might still order 1 or 2 per table, but definitely not one for every guest.

I am thinking I will DIY these. I will have lots of paper and little decal items left over from my DIY invites, so I won't need to spend any more money on them. I don't think they are necessary though.

LOL...there isn't much at a wedding that's truly necessary. Menu cards fall into the "extras" category. Do you need a custom made floral piece for your sweetheart table? No, not really -- collecting the BMs bouquets and setting them at the front of the table will give you a nice floral look. However, a custom made piece takes it up a notch. It's like little favors -- which are totally unnecessary. One WW bride just posted pics of her favors -- boxed, gift wrapped, and topped with a ribbon and seasonal fall leaves. They're so pretty, but did she need them? No.

I like menu cards (which is weird because I think programs are a waste of time and money). Especially for a buffet dinner, I like the way they look sitting at each place setting. It's really up to you. If I were attending a buffet reception with multiple dishes available, I would immediately pick up that menu card and start reading it. I'd like to know what's going to be available for dinner before I was standing in front of the choices -- but that's just me. A plated meal? Not so much, but for a buffet, I think you have the perfect excuse to add one more pretty and unnecessary flourish -- if you want to. Remember, it isn't necessary, but it's nice.
