Menu advice needed: Is this enough for 35 guests?

Kajika, on September 4, 2023 at 7:32 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 2

Hello everyone,

We're planning a cocktail reception for around 35 people and wanted to get some opinions on whether our food selection sounds sufficient. We're thinking of serving 5 passed hors d'oeuvres, 3 cold hors d'oeuvres, a fruit platter, and a charcuterie board, and setting up 3 stations - one for meats, one for tacos, and another for sushi. Additionally, we'll have a chocolate fountain. For the younger guests, we'll have fried chicken and meatballs. Does this menu seem like it would be enough to satisfy our guests?

Everything sounds delicious. For a cocktail reception, what you have listed goes above and beyond what is normally served. Contrary to popular belief, heavy appetizers are not cheap because you are paying for the labor of assembly and staffing to serve them. A true heavy appetizer reception served ant a meal time actually serves more food than a plated meal, which is why plated dinners go home hungry in comparison. Because a plated meal is the equivalent of 3-5 heavy appetizers per person and a bare minimum heavy appetizer reception is 15-20 pieces per person. If someone goes home hungry from that, it’s not the hosts’ fault.

What you have listed is a great spread and no one should be hungry during a meal time because that is the equivalent of 4-5 full plates back to back per person if everyone eats from everything. Be prepared that it will not be inexpensive by any means but guests will enjoy the variety. Tables and chairs for each individual as if you are having a regular plated:buffet dinner is a non negotiable because they will leave early if you have seating for 10-80% only.
