Meeting w/dj & Planner

Tiffany, on July 23, 2020 at 8:23 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

Kinda long... sorry!

When did everyone meet with their dj? We haven't met ours yet but we had like an hour long phone conversation with him about a year ago when we first started the planning process and really liked his energy and after talking with a couple others we decided he was the best fit. So we booked him.

My planner that I've booked for mostly decorations and such (she has a she shed lol and everything is rolled into her cost) is telling me usually couples meet with her, the dj and the photographer at the same time and between the 3 of them they create the timeline. I'm needing to order invitations soon and idk what to put for the start time so I'm thinking i want to meet with them sooner than later but I've read couples don't usually meet with the dj until a few weeks before. Also the photographer is saying he has never been asked to attend the meeting with the dj. So now I'm confused.
When is the right time (or best time since everyone's different) to meet with the dj?Does the photographer really need to be there?Who really creates the timeline for the event? Start time, mostly. Wedding is 10/3/20 so we're just over 2 months out, am i jumping the gun and overreacting?
Getting different answers from different ppl and not sure if it's me or them so any tips on what worked or didn't work for others would be helpful!

I met with my dj on face time like 2 weeks before my wedding. I created the timeline and my photographer was very go with the flow and didn’t have any input on it. My dj gave me a few tips to improve the pre-dancing flow and it worked out great. But I picked the start time way before all of that based on the sunset time, which I googled. My main goal was to make sure we got outdoor photos done before it got dark. Once you have the start time everything else can be adjusted later.

I would absolutely recommend including the photographer in the timeline discussions. The photographer usually has a pretty good idea of how long each set of pictures will take, so you can make sure you set aside enough time for everything. The DJ should also be aware of the timeline. I'd recommend putting together the timeline soon, just so you know a definite start time that is agreed upon by everyone before you send out your invitations.

That's literally my only question to them is what time do i put as the start time and it's like everyone acting like i should just know. How long before sunset did you put your start time at?

That's what I'm trying to do but I'm looking for guidance from the people in paying to help me and they're kinda passing the buck it seems and idk if I'm just not communicating clearly or what. I have no idea how long the ceremony will take we're not doing anything crazy. I have no idea how long before sunset we need to start pictures which is why I'm asking my photographer. I have no idea how any of this works lol driving me insane. I guess i expected that having a planner meant that she'd take the reigns and tell me when it's time for this and that but guess I've watched too many movies

I did 2 hours before sunset so there would be plenty of wiggle room. But 1.5-1 hour before would have been good too.

We met with ours about 4 months before the wedding - but we'd been in contact with her earlier. From then on we just emailed/called, until day of.

Your DJ can help you with a timeline, but usually your vendor coordinator or day-of coordinator is the best person for this. They can often work together.

I am planning 2 hours prior to sun set as suggested by my fiance.
