Maybe TMI but I have to ask. Birth Control!

Beautiful August., on January 13, 2011 at 3:19 PM Posted in Married Life 0 53

I was on the generic of Yaz- Gianvi. It was okay but I noticed that it made me super sleepy. There were days were I would sleep for about 12 hours straight! Also, I was extremly moody. Then my doctor switched me to Ortho Tricyclen Lo. It's been okay but I still notice that I'm moody and a bit sleepy. Not as much as before but I still notice it. My doctor was talking to me about switching my birth control method. She suggested either the shot or a non hormonal IUD. I wanted to get experiences from you ladies. I know we are all different but knowing what you went though doesn't hurt. So, if you don't mind, please share your experience with me. Thanks in advance!

I've had both. If you were moody on the pill, it will be magnified ****x times with the Depo shot. It also makes you gain weight. (Not so great before your wedding, amirite?)

I have the IUD now, and I love it! Very little side effects, and I actually lost weight. I also didn't have periods for like 3yrs on it (they have come back now).

I will never ever do the depo shot. I was actually given it by accident when I was 18 (I was going in for the HPV Vaccine and they instead gave me a depo shot because they assumed that is what I needed because of my age...) and it made me gain 40lbs in 3 months. I am still struggling with that weight.... In hindsight, I should have sued them...

I am on the pill. It's been working pretty good. The only side effect I have noticed is that I don't have as big of a sex drive, and I'm ok with that most of the time. I don't want anything that is going to stop the reg because that is my way of knowing I'm still working. lol

I've had both and hated them both. Hate is such a strong word, I know, but I really, really hated them. I felt sick all the time. I use Nuva Ring now too and have zero problems.

I had the Depo shot, and 6 weeks later- I got pregnant, will all 3 of my kids. Needless to say, it didn't work for me... haha!

If they changed the birth control and you are having the same problems, I'd wonder if it's the birth control causing it, or something else.

Before switching birth control, I'd run a full vitamin panel to make sure you aren't low on B12, which is one of the ones that helps with energy.

I guess the shot is out. In regards to the IUD, I just don't know if I can handle that being in there. I know, TMI! But I fell as if I'm going to be feeling it all the time. I'm sure I'm over reacting and it's probably something that I should look more into because DS and I don't plan on having kids for about 5 years or so and that seems like it would be the perfect fit!

@Meghan, that's what my doctor thought when I told her I wanted to switch from Yaz. She looked at everything and even took a blood sample to make sure that there wasn't something else that could possibly be causing those symptoms and everything came back normal. She things that it's too many hormones for my body to handle.

I was on the pill for years and no issues until after my daughter then it made me nauseous. Then I got on the patch, Ortho Evra, that was great for me for 5 years, then I got terrified of all the deaths and horrible health issues women starting having.

So I tried Nuvaring for 3 months and got off that QUICK. Any mood I was experiencing got elevated times 5! My co-worker and I started it at the same time and she was just angry allll the time lol. I was gonna try Mirena (the T-shaped insert) but my doctor didnt recommend it for me. So now, I've been off BC since Dec 20069 and luckily no mishaps (fingers crossed)!

I'm debating on wether or not to get back on BC until after the wedding just to make sure I dont have any unexpected guests lol.

I was on the pill ages ago and I was a raving lunatic on it and gained weight like mad. Im not on any birth control other than condoms and getting ready to find out how to get my body ready to make some babies in 5 months. :-)))))

I've never had great experiences with hormonal birth control until I got on my current one (and I'd tried A LOT of different kinds of pills, the Nuva ring, and the shot). All made me moody, extremely emotional, or gave me bad headaches. Now I'm on Azurette or Apri (same low dosage, different brands I guess) and have been ok with that. I would have loved to have the non-hormonal IUD, and had it placed, but just didn't work for me. (I have a small uterus evidently - now this thread is TMI! - never even knew someone could have a "too small" uterus)

You CANNOT feel an IUD. I think you are thinking of the Nuva ring, which you have to take out and put in. An IUD is inserted by your doctor, and can only be removed by your doctor. Most last 5 years. It's waaaaaaay up in your uterus, like I said, you will never feel it.

Ok so I can't take the pill, I have veyr bad reactions and because of some other issues they have since put me on an IUD. The first 6-8 weeks I did feel it - I was told that is not normal, but I hated it. I was crampy and misserable. If I wasn't being treated for something I might not have stuck with it. But then one day it just stopped bothering me. Since then if i get a minor period a month is a lot. I used to bea 2 week person. so this is much much better. I would totally recommend it but be prepared the first couple weeks can suck :-)

I was on Depo and it was the WORST experience I've had with BC. I spotted for almost a year waiting for my body to get used to it, which it never did. I'm on the ring now and LOVE it! Insert one once a month and forget about it for three weeks. And it really isn't as bad as you think, putting it in. I'm horrible at remembering to take a pill the same time each day. Liked the patch but it left band-aid like marks and by the end of the summer, I had a square tan line where I always put it. X-D I recommend it to anyone who can use it.

Thanks so much ladies! I appreciate you guys opening up to me about this. I think I'm going to consider the IUD. I'm just going to look more into it. I'm pretty tired of the hormonal side effect of the pill!

    Thanks again!

Honestly it drives me crazy that doctor's dont really suggest any other BC besides the pill or maybe a few minor other ones... I had to ask specifically why an IUD wouldnt be hte best for me, as someone who constantly forgets BC, and she admitted there was no reason. SO! I have Mirena, and i LOVE IT. you have to deal with some bleeding the first couple months, but it's the best, once you get past that! And no worries about it, either Smiley laugh I love it. Plus -- my sister and my best friend both were on Yaz and other normal BC pills, and they got preg anyway even using it properly. Yeah... I'll stick with IUD!!
