Marriage Licenses. How early?

Soon2bMrsSmith, on March 10, 2014 at 9:21 PM Posted in Planning 0 25

How far in advance did you go to pick up your marriage license? In MD it's a 6 month window where you can get your license. How early is too early?

    I only had a 30-day window so I got it as soon as I could to take it off my plate

    You have to look up your states requirements. I live in NJ and like @king we only have a 30 day window. Plus you need to see what the waiting period is after you apply for one. Ours was a 72 hour waiting period.

    We were told by our officiant that in Virginia it's a 2 month window, so we will be getting them as soon as we possibly can.

    In Pa you have a 60 day window and the waiting period is 3 days, we went 2 weeks prior to the wedding date.

    I'd say go 4-6 weeks in advance. You also want a little wiggle room after your wedding date in case something happens and you can't legally be married on your wedding say (e.g., if the officiant doesn't show up).

    In Alberta, Canada it's good for 3 months and there is no waiting period. We went a few weeks before and then delivered it to our minister since the church was right down the street and we wanted to make sure it wasn't misplaced or lost.

    I just looked up the requirements for MN and we have a 6-month window. I am going to wait until I see what we need from my pastor. Since we are doing pre-marital counseling we get some sort of discount and I am not sure how to go about that.

    @ashley that is correct. But whats the point of applying and waiting till 30 days before to pick it up. Plus I said 30 day window as it expires 30 days after the date the person types it up at.

    As long as you're within the legal window, it can't really be too early. However, you might want to think about not getting it on the very first day. If, heaven forbid, something happens that makes you need to postpone the wedding, it would be one more hassle if you had to get a whole new license.

    As for us, we had the opposite problem. We live in Maryland, but were getting married in Massachusetts. And since we were arriving there only the day before our wedding, we had to get special court permission to waive the usual three-day waiting period.

    We had 30 day window. We got it pretty early on because DH's work schedule is insane in the October/November.

    @Paris - you actually had a 60 day window :-)

    We did too, and we got ours fairly early in that time period to check it off the list. I had to take a half day of work and wanted to give us some wiggle room if we had forgotten a paper or something silly

    I only had a 30 day window, so we went a week and a half prior.
