Marriage License/Certificate...Destination Wedding question!

Sarah, on May 4, 2016 at 3:11 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

Hi all! I have a question...my fiance and I are having a symbolic ceremony in Mexico in January. We both are residents of the state of Texas. I would love for us to legally marry in Louisiana because my grandmother is 97 and can't make the wedding or really travel at all. I would love for her to be a witness. I don't really understand how to make this work though. Do I need to get a license and then the legal ceremony is performed all in louisiana? Can I get the license in texas and legally marry in LA? Do I need witnesses at both or can I do it all at once? Any help would be much appreciated. Also, my fiance is Canadian and has a green card here in US so his birth certificate is canadian. Is that an issue during the legal part? Thanks!!! -Sarah

Some states does need a witness and some don't. If you ask the court for marriage certificate, they will ask you if you need witness Coz some courts does provide witness if your don't have anyone to show up!! Hope this helps

If you want to legally marry in Louisiana then contact that county for their requirements. The rest would just be ceremonial.

The best advice for any license question is to contact the county in the state where you want to get married. No one here is qualified to give you an answer.

Thank you! I just really wanted to know if it's a problem to have your license/legal marriage certificate from a different state in which you reside cause I'll obviously need to do name change after the destination wedding. Hopefully it's not a problem with the resort performing the symbolic ceremony that our state marriage license/certificate doesn't match the state which we live in either

Your LA marriage would be recognized in TX. I marry couples from other states and even other countries and their marriages are recognized at home.

But, LA is unusual. They don't have counties -- they have parishes. They also have 2 types of marriages -- regular and 'covenant' (you're not allowed to get divorced). But, if you're not a resident of LA, it probably does not matter. So, you really need to check the parish office where your g'ma lives (if that's where you want to get legally married).

I have no idea what Mexico will require.
