Marriage license, live streaming the ceremony, and stressing over Covid canceling our June date (socal).

Hey everyone!

My wedding is scheduled for June 6th as of now (fingers crossed) and our original plan was a small ceremony on the beach. FH and I want to get married on that date even if its just us and the officiant but I have some concerns that I haven't seen discussed yet.

We haven't picked up our license yet, they are good for 90 days in Cali and Covid shut our courts down on day 87 (or so). I know I can do a private license but the pain of that is daunting, so we'd really rather not. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on this? Is the private license not that bad to deal with?

Also, we have multiple family members who are high risk and don't want to take any chances, which is totally understandable to us. We want to live stream but anyone have suggestions on what platform to use? I've never live streamed so any suggestions for me to look into are truly appreciated.

I really appreciate any help with this!

I'm not sure how you'd even get a private license at this point. It's still something you need to pick up from a government office, and those are closed.

That being said, the big issue with a confidential license is that only the couple may purchase copies of the marriage license and must present valid picture identification together with the required fee to the County Clerk in order to do so. So if you ever need a copy and have moved out of California, it could be a big pain to get.

Thats my biggest concern with a confidential license, but when speaking to some planners they said you rarely need copies, even my county clerk said that. They say the only time you need copies is the initial name change and such. And with public certificates, no one knows when copies are acquired.

Does anyone have experience or knows someone who has a confidential license?

    Hi Candice,

I'm sorry that you're dealing with these challenges as you plan for your upcoming wedding. Unfortunately, I don't know anything about confidential licenses. I did a quick Google search, and I found that the San Francisco Office of the County Clerk is allowing people to request confidential marriage licenses by mail or online while they're closed. However, it doesn't mention anything about requesting new marriage licenses (that I've found).

As for the live streaming question, I believe you should be able to create a (private) Facebook group for the guests who are unable to attend in person. Then, you can use Facebook Live to stream it. Here's an older discussion thread re: Live stream wedding ceremony? And here's a more recent conversation about Live stream options.

    Good luck! Smiley heart
