Marriage license for out of state wedding

Hannah , on June 8, 2019 at 7:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 5
We are getting married in NY and live in NJ. What state do we need to get the license? Does it matter? There was so much confusion on this at my Pre Cana class!

Almost always it’s the state you’re getting married in. Sometimes it’s as specific as the county you’re getting married in so I would call the clerk’s office for the county you’re getting married in.

You will need a license in NY...where you are getting married. That is where your marriage will be registered.

We are getting married in NY but live in VA. Just look up the county you will be getting married in and see what their website says. I believe for most of NY, you can get the license up to 30 days in advance, but need at least 24 hours in between getting the license and when the actual ceremony takes place. They require a few forms of identification for each party so check that as well. I believe passport/drivers license and birth cert are what we need. You get the license wherever the ceremony is taking place. Doesnt matter if you live in a different state.

    Same here!
You have to get your marriage license in New York State. The license is valid for 60 days and has a waiting period of 24hrs.
We're getting ours July 5th when we're in the town we're getting married for the holiday weekend.
