Making my own dress

Combay, on September 9, 2012 at 5:22 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 0 14

I basically want something unique and I want to save on the cost of the wedding dress. I've already gotten my fabric and am excited. I'm going to start the muslin this week. It's been hard to work on things following my foot surgery, but hopefully I'll be doing better this week. I'm actually using a simplicity pattern, but plan on changing the side zipper to a back corset opening. I'm excited. I'l be posting update.

That's my hope and prayer. I hated trying on dressed cause they were all way too heavy than they needed to be and nothing that I want to spend the night dancing in.

Oooh I'm so excited there's someone else out there making their dress! I'm making my own as well, or atleast the skirt & sleeves, I already have a corset. I have one skirt half done, but after an epiphany of realizing my dress idea was too complicated compared to my sewing skills, I'm nixing it & will start over with a simpler design. Good thing I only spent about $100 on the materials. I know how to sew, got a machine, but a wedding dress is complicated esp since I'm doing it freelance, with no pattern. So I'd advice you however your doing it using pattern or memory ideas, make sure you plan, draw even, measure & measure again. If you start with an idea & it doesnt pan out, be prepared to have to start over again.

But that aside, it's so fun, knowing it's your very own design, your style, fits just for you! It makes wearing it that much special.

What are your colors? Will you be doing white dress or other colors?

Mine is silver corset & purple skirt.

Oh I'm definitely using a muslin to mock up the design before I cut up my material. I still have to get my underlying material to be below the lace. But thanks for the advice Masquerade.

I've also got a body form in my size to use for draping and sizing as well.

I’m making my own without a pattern as well... and you are right, be prepared to switch to a different plan if it isn’t coming out right.. a few dresses I made in the past I had to do that.
