Make up regret

Samantha, on August 11, 2015 at 10:48 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 37

I had my wedding in another state. I am Asian and I often find it difficult to find a makeup artist who knows how to do my makeup. I flew in multiple times before my wedding to have makeup trials and found one makeup artist who could do whatever I told her to do. (As most of the artists are really artists and they would not like to listen to instruction.)

However, on the day, she changed to give me tanning!!! At that time I did not have a mirror to look at. Now I look at the photos and I just want to cry. My face was sooooo tan, but my lips were pale. My shoulders and arms were so white. I totally regret not to do my own makeup. Two of my bridesmaids opt for doing their own makeup.

Do you think I should complain to the makeup artist?

You could, but what would it accomplish? You did not tell her "no" when she started the tanning. And how did you not have a mirror? She didn't show you or you didn't check yourself out somewhere before leaving?

I have to agree with E-Tex, I don't think complaining will do much good at this point. It's unfortunate but if you felt pretty the day of and were happy with it, why agonize over pictures? I understand they're you're wedding photos but maybe you can find someone to edit them a little to adjust the coloring.

Do you have a picture you can share? You may think it's worse than it is.

I'd probably send an e-mail along the lines of-

"I just wanted to send you an update when I got photos back, the bronzing you did to my face came out much harsher in pictures than expected, leaving my lips, neck, and chest looking not how i imagined." I'd include a picture "I'm very dissapointed, and wish that you would have tried this at the trial as well, but I just wanted to provide you with some feedback for your future brides"

I agree with EricaTx, unfortunately. I'm so sorry that this happened to you, but I'm also a bit surprised there was no mirrors involved on the day of. Maybe some photo-editing can be done, or you could do a "trash the dress" session if you really want more photos.

Also, it could have looked great when she finished, but the lighting and flash made things funky.

You could definitely edit some photos to make it less noticeable. My cousin overdid the tanning for her wedding but her photographer toned it down A LOT and she looks a normal color in her professional photos.

I'm sorry but I think I agree with photoshop might be your best friend. I think your photographer could have done that. I would want my photographer to make those edits!

I agree with Brenda, talk to your photographer and see if they can lighten you up a bit more with photoshop. Photoshop can do wondrous things.

OP - can you address the mirror question? It seems like you would have reviewed the look with your MUA prior to paying her or her leaving for the day. In all of my trials, the MUA insisted that I look in the mirror to make sure everything was exactly as I wanted it.

For those that remember my 6 failures. At some point you just give up, say it looks great just to be able to leave.

So, during the trial, I don't understand why the makeup artist did not let me look at the mirror. At the beginning of the trail, I showed her my foundation and made sure she used that tone. Then when I tried to look into the mirror halfway, she said no peeking. So, I thought that's usually what it is. I had done another trial in MN and it was the same thing. The artist wouldn't let me look at the mirror in the process.

On my wedding day, she only let me use a mirror right after my makeup was done. When I saw it, it was done and I already said it was too tan. I asked why she didn't follow the trial. She said it was the summer and immediately wiped off lots of shading bronzer.

I put sunscreen on everyday and keep my face and neck the same tone as my shoulders. All my effort was wasted.

After that my bridesmaids helped me put some powder on to cover up the tanning. So, at the wedding ceremony, my face was not that tan. But in the photoshoot and video before the wedding ceremony, I looked really tan. I gave the makeup artist the same lipstick I used at the trial because my lips got irritated to random lipsticks. That lipstick matched the skin tone at the trial, but obviously it won't match the tanned skin.

How you look in a mirror and how you look in a picture are two different things, and besides that, I could imagine not thinking to look in a mirror-- you are busy, running around trying to get ready, it just doesn't occur to you.

I do think it is probably not as bad as you think, and that with time, you won't feel so badly about this. I am not sure if you will feel better if you complain to your MUA-- probably not, so I wouldn't recommend it. If your photographer is willing, he/she may be able to edit the photos a bit, though I know a lot of wedding photographers specifically won't provide that kind of editing.

I'm sorry you're feeling disappointed-- I am sure you actually looked great and this was probably just something that happened thanks to photography.

Agreed with Barbara- when i mess with the contrast of photos sometimes stuff like that is more evident.

We were running late and had to start the photoshoot. My photographer said she could adjust the tone. So, I had to make payment to the makeup artist and let her leave. I thought it was the bronzer that made me that tan coz I trusted that she would follow the same tone we used at the trial. At the trial I had asked her to write down the foundation number she used. She didn't and I thought she would do it after I left. She took lots of photos after the trial. So, I thought she would follow the trial.

After the first set of photoshoot right before the ceremony, my bridesmaids helped me lighten the tone more and realized that it was the foundation, not the bronzer. We were running late and we really had no time to fix things. The venue at first said there would be a mirror. We did not see a mirror and at the end we had to look through the building to find one for the hair stylist. So, the makeup artist just had one small mirror for us.

My photographer said it would take some time for her to edit the photos. I only have some screen captures of the video. My videographer has adjusted some part of the video. However, it is just difficult to adjust the video.

We did not realize she sprayed tan on my neck as well at the wedding. That night when I tried to take off my makeup, I wiped down my neck. Basically a brown color came off and it was a huge different from my original skin tone.

When I look at the videos, because we didn't realize the neck also had the same issue, there is a tan line between my neck and my shoulders.

Oh no! I think from your story it does sound like the only solution is talking to you Photographer and seeing if they can edit more.
