Lutheran Wedding Ceremony

JMPtobe, on December 7, 2015 at 9:44 PM Posted in Planning 1 8

Hi all! FH and I are getting married on June 11 2016. We are having our ceremony at a Lutheran church (though neither one of us our Lutheran, its my grandparents church). Can anyone give me some feedback on how long a typical Lutheran wedding ceremony lasts? We plan to have readings and songs, but no communion. Thanks!

I think it depends on the church, but at my Lutheran church our ceremony will last about 30 minutes. But just ask the Pastor.

We found a Lutheran service online (my side) and adapted it for our ceremony - it gave us choices, such as version of the Lord's Prayer, etc. We did personalized vows - I had written a whole sheet of paper to read, and we had a solo, 2 readings, short sermon, etc. No hymns or communion. With processional and recessional, it was half an hour.

Ours was 20. We had all the typical professionals and such plus two readings, unity candles with a solo and a short message. I think it gets longer, like 30 min range when the pastor does a homily.

I stood up in a Lutheran ceremony. I don't know exactly how long it was but it went quick. Vows. Rings. Kiss. They didn't add anything extra i.e. readings, unity candle etc.

Hi Jenna! This will vary a lot even from church to church within the Lutheran denomination. Definitely best to ask your contact at the church!

I am Lutheran. Without communion, and (usually) a shorter sermon since it's a wedding, you probably will have a half hour to 40 min service. The Lutherans have great music! This is what makes the services longer than other Christian denominations, but it's so worth it!

(My usual church service, including communion and my pastor's notably long sermons [often 20 min!] are typically an hour and 10 min. Our communion takes longer too, even when we do continuous communion where you don't kneel to receive bread and wine, because the pastor makes it a point to look directly at each person when saying "bread for you" and all that. A nice gesture, unless you want to get out of there! lol).

We are doing a full service at my church. With about 150 guests and lots of special music, I'm sure it will take over an hour. But that's ok! That's the most important part of the whole day! I'm so excited for it.

I had a Lutheran ceremony, but cut a lot of parts out for the sake of time and the fact that my husband isn't super religious. It was about a half hour long. My pastor did a shortened version of a sermon, we said the Lords Prayer, exchanged personal written vows and I think that was it!

Thanks so much for all the responses!! We are using a family friend as our Pastor. He's 87 years old and keeps telling us "it can be as long as you want." So I just wanted to get a rough idea. If anyone has any song suggestions I'd love to hear ideas. Wedding planning is a lot more work than I ever imagined and I appreciate any input! Thanks again for everyone's input!
