Lunchtime reception with only champagne?

BalletShoesRachel, on July 10, 2013 at 12:34 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

So. We're having a morning/early afternoon wedding, because we like the way it will look, with light streaming in over our white, gold, silver, and crystal wedding. We're planning on having a plated meal, which will be more like dinner than lunch. It's going to be pretty formal. We don't want a bar or people getting drunk, because we don't like that atmosphere, but also because it's, well, in the middle of the day. We're thinking of doing "all the bubbly you want" instead. We both love the idea; I'm just wondering if this could be considered boring? We will, of course, also be providing non-alcoholic beverages, and, for those who can't stand bubbly, we will have red wine by the glass.

Would you be upset by this, if you attended a wedding at this time of day, and you knew it was going to be formal and plated?

Oh, and we will have some dancing, but don't want a club atmosphere. We're thinking jazz music and whatnot--fun, classic stuff that everyone can enjoy dancing to. Smiley smile

While i would not at all enjoy dancing to jazz, i think the rest sounds really nice for a daytime wedding. just be aware that if you serve unlimited champagne and also red wine, people are going to drink it and some may get drunk.

A lot of people really hate champagne. I like the taste, but it gives me an awful headache, so "all you want" really wouldn't make up for the lack of options to me.

If I were in your situation, I might do sparkling wine instead. You can have options available in red, white, and rose, and the alcohol content is actually lower than true champagne. People can and will get drunk off champagne.

This is actually almost exactly the type of wedding I'm going for too, so I'm really glad I'm not the only one : ) I've been struggling with the alcohol involved too. I think the champagne idea is a good idea to include a touch of alcohol without going overboard. Plus, personally I think it's hard to drink a lot of champagne so it will probably save a lot of money as opposed to a full bar. I agree that sparkling wine is another good choice because some people think it tastes better.

Thanks, everyone! Smiley smile Yes, we actually are considering sparkling wine instead--it's more what we prefer from the venue/catering's available options.

Also, when I say jazz, I'm talking more like jazzy classics... Aretha Franklin and so on. Not sure what to call it, if not jazz, but I don't mean the weird crap you hear on public radio, either.

It sounds amazing to me! I agree with the sparkling wine too. What if you went with one type of champagne based drink? Like mimosas or a blushing bride? Either way it sounds awesome

Sounds wonderful! I agree with the idea of having one champagne cocktail, such as mimosas. It's going to be very classy Smiley smile

Our wedding sounds the same as yours! It’s during the day, a plated “dinner” meal, and fairly formal. We’re offering beer, wine, champagne, and mimosas (so champagne). I think it’s a cute idea and I would not be disappointed.

Rev. Ann, it's more the mindset, I think, that we're after. I don't mind if people get intoxicated on the stuff, but it's not like we're providing a full bar and allowing them to get as trashed as they want. Maybe "all the bubbly you want" isn't the right way of saying it... basically, we will be having it like others have a "signature cocktail," the drink of the day... not just for the champagne toast.

I think that also, providing only this will hint that we are not going to be amused by someone's drunken bar-fight, etc. Smiley winking
