Lumpy, uneven bodice problem!

Suzannah, on May 22, 2012 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 16

I am having issues with the bodice of my dress. It was altered from a size 6 into a 4, and I believe the seamstress left my bodice lumpy and uneven in doing so. My attached photo shows what it looks like on the left, and what I think it should look like on the right (thanks to some photoshop magic). The right side has a deep crease in it, which went away when I stuck a folded sock along it. Can something like a shoulder pad be sewed into the side maybe to fill it in? The left side is totally uneven... there is a lump at the bottom that sticks out further than the bottom of the opposite side. Suggestions please?! Plus, I don't want to have the same specialist fix it. When confronting her about it she said it was normal and looked good.

Can you take this to a different person who does alterations (maybe someone who specializes in wedding gowns) to see if this can be fixed?

Yeah I would take it to a different place. Sucks spending more money to fix someone's mistake though! You can get bra inserts if you feel like that would fill it out more. Like cups that get sewn in.

You are right - the seamstress did not do much with the bodice and that is why it looks lumpy. I would take it to someone else and see if they can fix it for you.

I am definitely going to have to bring it to someone else. I don't know anything about alterations, but do you think maybe a stiffer structure on the sides is needed to hold a better shape?

The seamstress did mess up the bodice. She doesnt want to fix it. I would call around and find another seamstress to fix it.

I wore a full on long line bra under mine to help it keep it's shape. I don't think we've met Suzannah, but I made my own dress and the fabric I used did not have much body. The full bra made all the difference. As for the uneven cups, I do think you should see a seamstress about that. Good luck! Beautiful dress by the way.

Thank you for the advice Julie! My dress just has cups sewn in, maybe I need to take them out and try the bra instead. Thanks for your help!

Hello - If I were you I would try your dress with a good corset bra - they often smooth things out. Also If you get another seamstress to look at your dress ask her if the previous seamstress took in all of the layers - not just the outside layer. I have fixed a few botched jobs in the past and found that some seamstresses just do the least amount of work by taking in the outside layer only, not the linings.

Also, check to make sure any boning that had to be removed for the alterations was sewn back into the dress.

Take your gown to a bridal shop and ask to try on corset bra's with it.

    Good luck to you.

Suzannah--Christine saved my life! Thanks to her, I was actually able to finish my dress. Here is a close up of the bodice, not a great pic, but you get the idea. I am wearing the full corset bra and there are no cups in my dress.

I had a lot of help from WW brides who sew and Christine helped me a ton..coaching me with many emails and links to tutorials-- I had to re-do the corset back 5 times to get it right--and it still wasn't as "right" as I had hoped. But it did turn out very nicely, and looks great in the pictures. It made my groom a little swoony and weepy, so I guess it worked!!

First question, did it come with the sweetheart neckline or did your seamstress create it for you. Did she pin your sides in or just estimate them. Some rouched dresses get layers flipped when being taken i, I can't really tell by your pic. Are you in the Seattle area, if so I can help you out. I am new to this site, I was told to check it out, I specialize in Bridal Alterations.

Yes the sweetheart neckline was added, and she did pin the sides, but they still obviously didn't come out right. Thanks so much for your offer, but I actually live near Cincinnati Ohio. Smiley smile I have found a local lady who is helping. She is inserting some boning into the sides for added support, which hopefully will create a better shape. Fingers crossed this works!!
