Lovely venue but the food is bland

Chantal, on December 2, 2018 at 1:22 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 35

What would you do in my position?

I love a catering hall that I've been looking at and my FH is ready to put a down payment but after going to a tasting without him I feel turned off by the food. The food just wasn't seasoned and it was very bland. My fiancé comes from a Caribbean background and we really want ourselves and our guests to LOVE the food since we are paying so much for it. We don't have the option to get outside food other than pastries and cake.

Maybe see if you can talk to the chef or coordinator and explain this to them. See if they can add more, or change the seasonings

To be honest, I would definitely talk to them and see if something could be done but I would still shop around a little more!

Definitely talk to them but yes I would look into other venues if I didn’t like the food at my venue. In my opinion the food is one of the most important parts of the wedding so I would find somewhere I liked

Bland food would be a no go for me. Food is such an expression of love! Talk with the coordinator, it might be possible to give some family recipes to the catering staff. Of course if your families cook like mine that means actually figuring out measurements 😆

We fired our first venue and got our deposit back for the same exact reason. No way were we going to spend thousands for food that was so bland. Coordinator had the nerve to tell us we could tell the chef how to cook the food with more flavor. Seriously? Hes not a chef then, hes just a cook!!

I would look into other venues. You want to have great food. If they're food was bland at a tasting I don't see how much better it'll be for the wedding unless they leave it bland and for you to advise them on the flavor. Since your fiancé has a Caribbean background foods gonna be important and I don't think I could go with a hall that's food isn't that great. Do you plan to serve Caribbean style food? Maybe try a hall that allows outside catering and someone that specializes in Caribbean food.

I couldn’t have my wedding there. Plain and simple. I’ve walked away from a couple of bakeries for that exact reason. If your product tastes like a— for a tasting, why in the hell would I give you my hard earned money and expect excellence on my big day?

One baker actually said to us “oh it’s ( the cupcake 🧁) is cold 🥶 and more dense than it would be on your actual wedding!” So you want me to imagine how it’s going to taste?! Yeah, no. Goodbye.

I would look at other venues. I've been to plenty of weddings (8 this summer alone) and the only thing everyone remembers about the wedding is the food (good or bad). I went to gorgeous mountain venues, vineyards, etc, but I honestly couldn't place each venue with each person - but I sure know which ones had good food.

This is exactly why I SEARCHED until I couldn’t search anymore for a venue that allowed us to bring in our own caterer. This was our same struggle. I’m greedy and have an insane love for food and FH is Caribbean and he KNOWS his family would throw the food in the face of the caterer if it wasn’t flavorful hahaha. Most places that didn’t allow outside caterers did say that they were open to criticism and direction on spices/flavor/etc. so definetly have an open dialogue with the chef and tell them exactly what you want. Some places were even willing to work with outside caterers if you had a specific type of cuisine they couldn’t replicate.

It's not a risk I would want to take. If you didn't like the food served to just you, I really can't see them improving the quality and taste when they're serving a large group of people. I would keep looking.

You are absolutely right. I didn’t want to feel like an entitled bride to be by making all these food demands and for also not liking the food

Most halls provide Italian style food at least for the ones that I have found. He doesn’t mind not having Caribbean food there but I want our wedding to be both or cultures coming together even if that’s not in the food plus I want the food to be delicious at best.

The lady who coordinated everything was very shocked at my food reaction. I just was so disappointed the place is so beautiful. You’re right the tasting is supposed to be you putting your best foot forward and if you can’t do that at the tasting I don’t have high hopes.

I am going to keep searching until I can’t search anymore. You are absolutely right. I’ll ask them about the outside caterer as well. But for what I am paying with them I don’t want to spend extra on food.

Being 100% honest I would run from bad food but if I really loved the place I would speak with them and see about having a second tasting of their version of seasoned food and see if it makes the cut

if you love great food and I imagine fiancé loves some seriously big flavors I definitely would not do with subpar food considering your expense.

actually I had this problem at the places that require you to use their food. My opinion is if their food was actually good they would stand by it and would have the confidence that even if you try others food they know they’re the best and you will be back...

if i I have to buy your food to use your place then your food probably isn’t good

people fight over the good caterers and tgey book early because every one loves great food... some people won’t remember anything about your wedding except if they had fun and the food was good...

That makes a lot of sense. I need to find a beautiful space that also has amazing food. I just don't want to give up on this place its so beautiful and has so much included.
