I love a catering hall that I've been looking at and my FH is ready to put a down payment but after going to a tasting without him I feel turned off by the food. The food just wasn't seasoned and it was very bland. My fiancé comes from a Caribbean background and we really want ourselves and our guests to LOVE the food since we are paying so much for it. We don't have the option to get outside food other than pastries and cake.

I like very spicy food. But I also like plain or subtly spiced food. Always spicy is as boring as always not. Judge by, is the food well prepared for what it is? If so, go with it. It is like any style issue, more than one thing will usually suit each person. I would not trade off an excellent venue, that serves well prepared food, just for spicier food. You can always ask for an appetizer or 2 that are special, in the same way many people get an outside cake.

If you love it it’s definitely worth the shot of speaking to someone but I definitely wouldn’t commit without a second tasting with much better results

Food was a big factor is choosing a venue and I would be completely turned off bland good. I'm Caribbean as well and am big on flavor! I understand some caterers choose to take it easy because of dietary needs. However, I would definitely bring this up, without being offensive of course, and see if there's any way they can bring a bit more life into their food. Good luck!
Do you have any other venues in mind if you choose not to go with this one?

Exactly what I was going to say. If you are really in love with this venue, I would chat with them about it and see if you can get another tasting.

    Best of luck to you!

I’m not sure if I can ask for another tasting. Part of me feels bad to ask for another tasting and then what if I don’t decide to book I don’t want it to seem like I’m taking advantage because the tasting was free.

The reception is a thank you to your guests. They want to eat delicious food and lots of it. They won't care so much about the beauty of the place if the food is not good. People remember food. I would have another discussion with the venue and clearly communicate what you didn't like and offer to pay for another tasting. If it still isn't good or they won't accommodate you, look somewhere else.

That’s a huge disappointment! I don’t think this place will be able to redeem themselves, I would keep looking! We looked for a venue where we could hire our own caterer so that we could have time to look for a good caterer for a good price!

As others have suggested, I think you should talk to the venue caterer. When I selected my venue I was told to let them know if they needed to add seasoning or sauce. When you are paying for the service they have to provide you with what you want.

    Hi Chantel,
I had a similar situation but I was already under contract for my venue. The venue changed owners a month after I signed my contract . The food I tasted was with the original owners vendor that was no longer going to be working with new owners. 6 weeks to my wedding date I finally got a chance to taste food from new food vendor and I was not happy. I spoke to the new owners and let them know how unacceptable the food was and I asked for them to allow me to bring in an outside caterer. They agreed and I found an amazing catering company which I was very satisfied with and so was my guest. Just ask before you sign your contract and put money down.

Thank you what would you have done if they didn’t allow the outside caterer?

Chantel honestly I think I got lucky since I had already signed a contract and had already put down most of the final payment. I was willing to get an attorney involved because it was very important to me to serve my guest quality food. I didn’t have to go that far because I think some of the other brides also complained about the food. I would not have booked them if I had tasted that particular vendor food in the first place.
