I used to be a school janitor and, I'm sorry, but unless that gem was the size of a ping pong ball, it very easily could've been swept up. Janitors aren't scouring the floor while pushing a 3-foot broom, they're usually looking ahead.

It may have been turned in. You can look in lost and found, post on school related social media sites, put a sign up offering a reward or talk to school administration or custodial staff, but chances are it's lost. If you are ever fortunate enough to receive anything that valuable again, make sure it's insured and do not take possession unless it is. Is it inscribed with a serial number? You could also consider reporting the loss to the police or local jewelry or pawn shops in case it were to turn up somewhere.

Be sure to check with lost and found which I bet you’ve already done.
I lost my gold hoop earring in the Olympic size swimming pool during swim practice. It wasn’t super expensive, but meant a lot. Well, I found it more than a year later on the pool floor while I was swimming. I couldn’t believe it. It didn’t get sucked into the filters or Polaris system and no one noticed it for that long.
    Good luck.

Oh man this stinks but don’t give up hope my mom lost her diamond at work and it was found 5 yrs later. Hopefully yours shows up much sooner. If you lost it inside shut the lights and use a black light or a flashlight to try and make it shimmer, check all cabinets and all nooks, under radiators and shelves, inside closets. If you have a desk at work check all the drawers. Even places you don’t think it could be like janitors closet, the bathrooms, and the teacher’s lounge. Let your co-workers and the cleaners/landscapers know so they can be on the lookout too. If you broke a prong when you hit it really could have fallen out anywhere, any chance it’s in your car, purse or an article of clothing you were wearing that day? Wishing you the best of luck and congrats on the engagement.

As much as it sucks try to remember the ring isn’t what is most important your love and bond with your partner is, but I do feel for you and understand why this would put a damper on this special moment. Keep looking and if you are religious pray on it, in the Catholic faith St. Anthony is considered the finder of lost things. I hope you find it soon.

Your jewler sounds sketchy I would definitely never go back.

For the time being you can get a moissanite stone for a couple hundred(or less) and it can be your filler until you guys can replace it.
Maybe go with a smaller lower set stone in the future if hitting your hands on things is common. No shade. I literally smack my hands on everything I barely wear my ring. Lol

Let the school know maybe they can relay to the janitors. Let all of your professors know. Hopefully they will check their classrooms and maybe announce to other classes. There are still good people in the world that would return it if they knew where to return it to. Try to think back, did your ring catch on anything? Check the floor of your car if you drive to school. Good luck!

This might sound weird but ask the school if you can have access at night when it’s dark. I found my moms diamond earrings at night with a flashlight because they sparkled when the light flashed over them - in the day light it’s hard to focus on anything. Try this! Grab a blacklight too, some diamonds have boron and can glow in the dark (mine does). Get a bunch of friends and have everyone retrace your steps. Check with school security and janitors. Plead to them what’s going on and pray they find it or someone turns it in. I will pray for you!!
