Lost my diamond today

Nora, on June 11, 2023 at 6:28 PM Posted in Community Conversations 3 62
Hello ladies

Today I lost the central diamond (a big one) of my engagement ring in school.
My ring is not insured!!!!
Any idea on how to locate it??

Bummer that the ring isn't insured! Sorry to hear that you lost the diamond. Maybe try retracing your steps to see if you can find it? Otherwise, I would bring it to a jeweler to buy another diamond to be put into the ring. Once you get this resolved, I would definitely look into getting ring insurance, just in case it happens again.

If you think it could be in 1 specific room like your bedroom, you can place a nylon sock on a handheld hose of a vacuum and scour your floors. Good luck.

Ouch. That is such a bummer! This really makes me question the jewelry store you got it from, because the ring should have been thoroughly inspected before it left the store to ensure no prongs were loose. Personally, I would contact the jewelry store and let them know what happened. Where you just purchased the ring, maybe they would offer to replace the diamond at a discount, since the diamond should not have fallen out right after purchasing it. Or, at the very least, maybe it will make them more diligent about inspecting their products in the future. This is a good lesson on why you never ever wear your ring out before it’s insured!

I agree with Cece. The jeweler did a sloppy job as the Diamond should not be able to fall out, especially if it’s new and not knocked around.

We’re assuming it’s brand new, but was it passed down/purchased secondhand? If not and it was purchased recently, there might have still been a warranty through the store! I would double check the terms of sale because that can last a few months up to a few years depending where you got it from.

It’s brand new from a shop. It was actually tailor made for me. I checked with the jeweler who said it most probably took a hit

Even if it “took a hit”, a diamond in a brand new setting should not have fallen out.

It sounds like the jeweler is not wanting to take accountability for a poorly set stone. One “major hit” should not knock a diamond loose from a brand new ring, unless it was improperly set. My ring has taken lots of hits over the past couple years, and it’s still securely set (I get it cleaned and inspected every few months to ensure the setting is still solid). I would raise your concern with the jeweler and see if they will compensate you in some way (whether it be replacing the stone, or allowing you to purchase a new stone at a discounted rate, etc.), or if the ring is still under warranty. If they won’t, I would definitely switch to a new jeweler to replace the stone. And get it ensured immediately before wearing it out!

Can you please explain what hits did your ring encounter?

In that case, you have 2 options available.

    1. Purchase a more affordable replacement ring. It doesn't even have to be a diamond, if you cannot afford one. There are tons of beautiful stones out there that are not diamonds!

    2. Just don't wear an engagement ring. A ring does not make you any more or less engaged. And you could put the money you would have spent on a replacement ring towards a really beautiful wedding ring that you love. A lot of women actually end up wearing only their wedding band after marriage anyway.

I would go back to that area then. Get on your hands and knees and search the ground like crazy. Make sure you search a wide radius, because tiny stones can bounce and roll pretty far

When I hit it I checked my ring cautiously… no stone fell off …. My heart actually skipped a beat when it happened… and the stone that fell isn’t tiny or even small; it’s a 4 carats one

My ring and stone has taken many hits and I’ve had it for almost 3 years and it’s never fallen out or even came loose. Your jeweler seems to be making excuses. If the stone is set properly with tight prongs around it, it should not fall out.
