Bahney, I don't consider myself less than for going with a cheap venue, I consider myself smart. I really wanted to be able to throw everything into food and booze, which I wouldn't be able to do if my whole budget went towards the actual venue.

Op, $700 for everything isn't going to get you anything unless your guest list is 5 people. I understand not having a lot of money, or wanting to save money but you need to be realistic. If $700 is all you have for the reception then you may just want to elope or wait to get married. (if having a reception is important to you)

Ladies Auxiliary clubs also tend to have inexpensive halls. Or you could look into renting a park pavilion.

Technically, I'm not paying anything for our reception venue. We have to spend $4,400 on food and alcohol and we will get the venue, bartender service, set up, clean up, a two room suite, and even decorations for the centerpiece for free. Plus if we have 200 people, we get $500 off of our bill, a complimentary keg of beer, wine and chocolate in our room, and a dinner for two for later. So it can be done if the $700 is for the venue only (obviously there needs to be more money for food and alcohol then.)

If 700 is the venue fee it really depends on the venue itself. As @Alyssachu said some places don't charge a fee but might be a price per plate. My venue is a ballroom attached to a restaurant and that is how it works for us. We paid a fee for the ceremony space (800&dollarSmiley winking and then paid a price per plate for the reception which was a 5 hour package including a full cocktail hour, 3 course plated meal and 5 hours of open bar for around 100 per person.

What is your budget for food and drink? Knowing that will be better able to help people point you in the right direction

You have to estimate half your budget for venue, food and drink which leaves you with at max 2k to host 40 people, which is right at 50 dollars including tax and gratuity/service charges. This is not impossible but it also only leaves you 2k for everything else and a good photographer will run you that.

I think you may want to look into a simple ceremony at the courthouse or park and then taking your nearest and dearest out to dinner at a restaurant. This way you won't need a DJ or anything like programs, favors ETC.

Realistically you need to work backwards here, assigning a budget without any details isn't realistic. what things do you want in your wedding? here's a list of potential items: photographer, cake, flowers, DJ, officiant, rings, dress, tux, food, alcohol, etc. Then narrow that list down to the things you couldn't have without at your wedding. Then look up about how much each of those things cost using the vendors tab on wedding wire or the knot. It goes based on location and they usually post actual costs or "inexpensive/expensive" so message some of those vendors for quotes. Then add up the costs and calculate how long it will take you to save. realistically 3-4K total budget could get you an very cheap wedding dress (most likely off the rack or just something white you found at macy's), a non professional photographer, and a dinner in restaurant or hall. Expect to at least spend 50$ per guest, even if it's just a hall rental those things add up. None of us can really help you unless we know what you're expecting, are you expecting a "nice" wedding for 3-4K or just a quick and dirty wedding without a DJ, photographer, flowers, etc. If you're expecting to have flowers, DJ, photographer etc then your budget will need to increase significantly. You don't want to assign a budget without having some estimates first, because otherwise you're going to have unhappy guests or some very low quality vendors. Here are some VERY basic price estimates from my wedding, which is not in Florida so keep in mind prices vary but it shouldn't be THAT far off from prices you can expect:

Dress: 1200 (you can find some off rack for 300$ that are old styles and probably not the correct size)

Alterations: 400 (you will need those for a legit wedding dress, may be more depending on dress)

Photographer: 3000 for 8 hrs coverage by professional

    Food: 40$ pp

    Alcohol: 16$ pp

    DJ: $1200

Flowers: $2000 for 4 bridesmaid bouquets, bridal bouquet, 8 bouteniers, 4 corsages, ceremony decos and 20 very simple carnation centerpieces, many budget weddings do their own bouquets and flowers

    Cupcakes: 500$ for 175 cupcakes

Park Venue Rental: $2000 (for ceremony and reception rental and set up, this does not include my food)

    Officiant: $250

Hair and Makeup: $250 for just mine day of

Invites, STDs, Stamps for 200 ppl: 900$ (yours would be much cheaper since you only have 40)

These are just a few examples to get you thinking about approx what a normal wedding looks like as far as prices go

    Hi Gemma:

I would suggest looking at a restaurant with just 40 people. The place I found below seems to have reasonable prices. They have a nice $150 for ceremony space to start, I would look at them and other similar places.

Your guest list needs to be like 10. And go out to dinner. That doesn't make you any less married because you spent less money

Try to find a place that won't charge for rental. About 10 years ago, my sister did a really pretty, yet chill, wedding at a local park that didn't charge (although she made a donation). She was able to use their garden for the ceremony and the pavilion areas for the reception.

If you are looking to cut costs - this is a great way. Another option, is VFWs, Moose lodges, and Kiwanis. Some of them have wonderfully updated halls and rent for a donation. They will frequently do the booze too and for super cheap.
