Looking for a venue within budget (or assurance on the one we have on hold)

Teresa, on March 7, 2020 at 9:58 PM Posted in Massachusetts Planning 0 8

We are planning for an August 2020 wedding in Western Massachusetts (Springfield/Amherst/Northampton area) for 100-150 on a budget of $15k including everything. We want our reception to be fun and uplifted, not stuffy but not too casual. I was hoping for an outdoor-indoor venue with a sort of family picnic-becomes-dance-party feel. Outdoor (tent or covered patio, as I don't want to worry about weather) for cocktail hour, indoor for the rest of the reception. We also prefer to use our own caterer and either bring our own alcohol or for the venue to have a bar inexpensive enough that we can offer open bar at least for a few hours. Everything we've considered is either a wedding mill, or is too expensive. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!!

Meanwhile, we have a hold on the Polish club in our hometown, which in some ways is perfect. My whole family is Polish and fiance's is Irish (we're having our Jack & Jill at the local Irish club he's belonged to since he was a kid). But the few people I've mentioned this to have either paused and then politely nodded "oh, I'm sure it will be nice" or outright groaned at the idea. Though the club has been renovated and we can pretty much do what we want with it, we've all been to weddings/dances/various events there and I guess our friends expect something more unique from us. It also just sits in a parking lot, so there isn't any outdoor feature at all. I think our family/friends expect us to come up with something more unique and interesting. We just want to throw a really fun party!

Has anyone dressed up a hall like a Polish club, VFW, Elks, etc.? I think it could be fun, but I don't want our guests to think "oh good grief, no" when they get the invitations...

Welcome to the WeddingWire community, Teresa! Congratulations on your engagement!

As it can be difficult to find a venue that allows external caterers due to liability concerns, I recommend you start with the catering company and see where they have catered a wedding before. This will provide you with a shortlist of places that you know allow external caterers! You can go through the list and figure out which fits your vision!

Do you know who your caterer will be yet?

Have you looked at The Log Cabin/Delaney House in Holyoke? It sounds like it might have some of what you’re looking for! We didn’t end up getting pricing from them but it didn’t seem to be super expensive and has lots of different indoor/outdoor options.

First off, congratulations!! I also am getting married in August 2020 and am from Western Mass! I am using a rod and gun club as my reception area and a church as my ceremony space. My mother had hers at the elks. Really as long as there is good food, good people and good music no one really cares that much about the building. Pinterest is my go to! Let me know if there is anything I can do to help. Feel free to message me!

Have you checked out look park in Northampton? They have beautiful outdoor locations for your ceremony and then they turned the pool house into a reception hall. It’s beautiful! It was my first choice until it didn’t meet our budget (10k). We ended up going with a place in Sterling, Ma called the 228. Had to postpone until next year but the 228 is also a beautiful location.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone! We are postponing until next year. Amidst everything that's going on, it's hard to think about committing to anything - besides each other, of course.

We are actually looking at Salem Cross Inn in North Brookfield for next summer or the Polish Club in Ludlow for a Halloween wedding.

And thanks for pointing me to the 228, Mariah. Will look into that as well! Now that we have a little time...

Hope everyone is well and healthy!

Hi Autumn, I left a comment on the thread but not sure it goes to everyone. I think we are going with Summit View in Holyoke, MA. We haven't been able to see it in person, but the owner and planner are super responsive and friendly, it's reasonable, and the food is good (I've had catering from Hamel's for family occasions and it's always been delicious).

    How about you?
