long Distance Maid of Honor

cenknerl, on May 6, 2010 at 9:28 PM Posted in Planning 0 12

My cousin is my maid of honor and she lives in a different state and goes to school and work full time. we reciently just became getting close again and talking to each other more than once a year. I am having the batchlorette party on Aug 7 which she did not help with the date etc. Now i was told by my aunt that she is feeling left out of the wedding planning. My schedule is busy too so i cant go up there. I dont know what to do to get her feel like she is involved. I dont even know what she could help out with because of being far away. i know i can see if she can design my wedding cake and to bake a small cake for me but besides that I dont know what I can do to get her more involved. Please help.

Why don't you ask her? I mean, if she wants to get involved she probably has some ideas about what she'd like to do to help you out. And if you ask her saying "I know that you're very busy so I don't want to burden you, but it is important to me that you be an important role in my wedding. What do you think you'd be able to do considering your schedule?"

My MOH is in Maryland and I am in Oregon. I use email to talk to her. I ask her opinions about things I want in the wedding. For example, the wedding colors I went to the wedding dress store and I found colors that I liked then I went to the paint store and found paint chips that matched the fabric colors and sent them to her. Or when I was looking for the venue I took pictures and emailed them to her. It is a way for me to feel like she is more involved but it also makes her feel more involved because she sees what I am doing and thinking plus she gets to sort of hold on to certain aspects of the wedding itself.

My MOH is in another state too(and soon to be another country since her husband just got a job in Canada). I keep her involved by just talking to her about my ideas all the time and asking her opinion, stuff like that. We don't really "talk" so much, just text, but at least she's involved emotionally/mentally even though she can't be physically.

My MOH is in another state as well, and we email and talk on the phone about various wedding issues. I agree with Ann Marie that you should just ask her if she has an particular ideas of things she wants to do--you could also ask her to handle phone calls with certain vendors and whatnot if there are things like that she could do.

I live in Kentucky and my MOH is in California. We talk on the phone almost daily and send lots of e-mails of pictures/ideas back and forth. It makes us both feel more connected!

Yep, same boat here. I'm in Oregon. She's in California. We yahoo chat a lot! E-mail, too. I tell her what's going on, bounce ideas off her and she helps a lot with searching for things on the net!

Same situation here my MOH is in CT I'm in ohio but I try not to bother her too much with wedding plans because she has been really sick from her pregnancy, but I believe she is ok with not helping with too much of the planning she is there to really support me on the Big day more then anything. If your cousin wants to be more involved I would just send her pictures of things to get her opinions. I do this with my sisters because they want to help out too.

My MOH is in England, and I am here in Oregon, so we definitely. have the long distance thing going (as well as an 8 hour time difference).

But we exchange emails daily, on colours, nice things we've seen etc, etc. I am doing my upmost to keep her in the loop.

My MOH is in NJ and I'm in OH. She came down for 4 days and helped me get all kinds of stuff together, she's coming for the weekend of my bridal showers, & then coming back again for the wedding. We've always been long distance best friends, so it doesn't feel as if she's not doing anything. She's really done a lot and my other best friend who lives here has helped me a LOT too because she's a BM and she knows MOH lives 700 miles away.

Ty I did not realize how common it is. I did send her information so she could help me design the wedding cake since she has a degree in it. I also sent her pictures of the wedding favors i was thinking about buying. I know she is not really involved but now since talking together again I realized that when she is available I can talk to her about stress and things going on. I guess that is part of the duties too making sure brides dont go insane right.

I have a long distance maid of honor as well. Im in MD she is in GA. But i also have another Maid of Honor who is here. I really do all the planning with my bff maid of honor who is in town, But I include my GA maid of honor in the planning my keeping her informed, sending pics and so on. She was here in March and I took her to all the venues we had chosen and to meet with the decorator. I want her to feel involved. She also exchanged numbers with my bridal party in order to plan for all the events. She feels involved and is helping me with opinion along the way, it works well.

Since she is far, try your best to send her updates. Hopefull she will be proactive and jump in when you need her, not just waiting for you to say anything.

I'm in a similar situation but my MOH has been my best friend for years. She is out of state though and it is ridiculously stressful because she doesn't really get to help with anything. I understand but its frustrating.

If you have other bridesmaids, I suggest letting them fill in. As for keeping her involved, try running ideas by her that you've been thinking about even if you've pretty much decided. Brainstorm with her on the phone about parts of the wedding you haven't totally decided on. E-mail is a life saver if schedules don't really match up.

This is your wedding. I'm sure she understands that. Don't stress yourself out by trying to be overly accommodating when she isn't able to commit more time to the wedding. If she wants to be involved, it is also partly her responsibility to try.

Talking about the situation honestly is also usually beneficial to you both and stress relieving.
