Let's Talk Cake!

Terra, on March 31, 2020 at 8:13 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 14

Wow, long time, no post. Life was so busy and now it's... well, not, so we're back to wedding planning.

Looking for cake flavor ideas/inspo. What are you going with, and why? What would you never order?

My sister, who has a baking business in it's baby stage right now, is doing the cake and we're having our first trial run this week. What flavors would you suggest for a September event with bbq for the meal? I'm thinking something light, but FH hates lemon cake so of course that's all I'm craving/thinking about, haha.

We’re having a 4 tier and will also be doing BBQ. My FH is super plain when it comes to flavors, so we’re getting two layers of marble cake with whipped cream icing, one layer of vanilla cake with whipped cream icing, and then I got to choose the top tier: strawberry cake with raspberry jam and cream cheese frosting. I bet a carrot cake would be a tasty option after BBQ.

Have multiple tiers. One that you like and one that he likes Smiley smile you can’t go wrong with chocolate or vanilla and a buttercream or raspberry filling is very popular. Fresh fruit as a filling can be very messy because the juices tend to seep into the cake and if not stored properly it doesn’t taste it’s best. I’ve also had banana cream with fresh banana filling. I’ve had Oreo filling as well. Especially it being your sister making the cake, you can really explore flavors!

We are doing both chocolate and vanilla!!! We love chocolate so we had to have that; however, we also want to smash cake in each other’s faces so vanilla would be best for that if it god on dress/suit Smiley smile

We’re going with a tiered cake like this 😊 my bff/MOH is a pastry chef too and she’s making our cake

Flavor wise we’re indecisive and have different opinions on the “other” flavors. We also wanted something on the lighter side, so we opted for vanilla. We’re also going for chocolate since it’s a popular flavor and red velvet since it’s delicious. Still undecided on a flavor for the 4th layer.
But I think if you’re doing a tiered cake it’s the perfect opportunity to offer different cake flavors to your guests so everyone has something they like Let's Talk Cake! 1

We did a marbled chocolate/vanilla cake with a dark chocolate filling. I'm a chocoholic, so DH knew I *had* to have chocolate.

We did 2 tiers, which ended up being juuuuuuuuuuuust about right (some people said they missed out on cake, but there was a whole dessert table, and I think others may have doubled up on cake while their tablemates got distracted by cookies...), and we had about 80 people.

In terms of light cake flavors, I’ve had a champagne cake, whites chocolate raspberry, and strawberry marscarpone at previous weddings that were delicious!!!

We’re doing marble with a chocolate bavarian cream. Most people like both flavors which is why we chose it. We’re also having a dessert table in case guests don’t like the cake. If I were a guest though, I wouldn’t want coconut, banana, or lemon flavors lol

We’re doing red velvet and vanilla cupcakes with a small one tiered cake that will also be red velvet. It gives our guests an option, and we like red velvet. We don’t have a particular flavor that we hate... but we can’t stand fondant. We opted for a rustic crumb coat for our cake instead.

Right now we are doing red velvet with a cream cheese frosting, but that could all change because we change our minds constantly lol. What I WOULDN'T do are the “seasonal” flavors that get offered. Two of my friends got married in fall and one had this like apple walnut cake and another had a maple flavor and nobody liked it. If I’m getting a big cake for everyone to eat I want a flavor people will actually eat so we aren’t throwing away a ton.

We did a 2 tier cake. The bottom tier was cinnamon brown sugar with brown sugar buttercream frosting. It was absolutely delicious! The top tier was fresh strawberry with vanilla buttercream frosting! Also super yummy.

During our cake tasting we tasted several different options. We fell in love with the cinnamon brown, so that is why we chose that one. We went with the fresh strawberry because it was a generic flavor that would likely go over well with all guests. We also did a full dessert bar for those who were not interested in cake.

Can you different layers? I too love lemon! Great for BBQ. Maybe another layer vanilla cake with chocolate cream filling? Not too heavy but yummy.

You can have multiple flavors. Lots of weddings do that. Browse Pinterest for ideas. You can have any flavor any time of the year.
