Lets talk about Cake Stands. Are they necessary?

RhnCasi419, on July 27, 2015 at 11:06 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

Coming to the end of planning here, and yes, we are aiming to cut corners where it won't matter. We have a beautiful 3 tiered cake with fresh roses on top - the tiers are separated by that satin ribbon, the frosting beautiful ivory scrolling that looks like lace. The cake will come on one of those circular gold foil cardboard things. They said we can rent a cake stand for $250. We gasped. So, they suggested asking our venue if they had one on hand "to borrow" or ask our caterer. Our venue doesn't have one, and our caterer said they just "present the cake." My question: Do we really need a cake stand or can this cake sit on top of that doily looking foil thing set on a table? Will it look tacky? Seriously so over the extra $200 there, $750 here. We are all for a great guest experience, our menu is really awesome, full open bar, music/dj. We are getting weary of all these extras right about now. Whats the deal on cake stands?

There's always Hobby Lobby or a department store for a cake stand. If you get a flat one nobody will see it anyway right? I think if the cake is pretty enough you really wouldn't need a fancy one.

They aren't necessary, but it looks pretty in pictures and your cake will seem taller. This is something we're also debating

If it is 3 tiers, I wouldn't do much for a cake stand. I agree with Jennifer. You could look at the one at Hobby Lobby or other department stores. Honestly though, I think it would be fine to just put it on the table with a lace doily under it to make it a little fancier.

You could always just make one. I think they look better with stands personally but I make cakes. I would never pay $250 for one, those people are trying to rip you off. You can buy one of those cake stands for less. I would just make a box out of wood or something and cover it in something matches your decor, maybe a nice fabric of some sort. It can be very cheap and quick to do.

I got a cake stand at Homegoods for $13, and another platter for $13 also. how big is your cake? if you want a cake stand you could definitely find one for less depending on its size.

But my Baker also said that if she puts two cake boards under the cake i dont need to use a cake stand if i dont want to.

My baker had stands to rent, but I didn't like the style, so I am just going to try to find one elsewhere. Or use a wooden crate that's painted (would fit with my theme) and put the cake on that. I don't think you need one, there's nothing wrong with the cake just being on the table.

If you spent the money on a pretty cake then I would get some sort of cake stand. Hobby Lobby, Craigslist in your area or a local FB bride sale site. You could seriously make your own too (check Pinterest)

Someone else posted recently about renting one from their baker and it was several hundred $-that is a rip-off. My baker loaned me one (my choice of multiple styles and sizes) and I had to write a check for her to hold in case I do not return it. That is the way it should be!

I've seen the same stands that my baker rents at TJ Maxx for like $40-$50. Also think outside the box, there are many things that can double as a cake stand. I found this piece "as is" marked down to, I think $30-$40 at TJ Maxx. I'm assuming it was originally a small table or large lazy Susan. It was originally all black. Added some glitter spay paint and now it will be my cake stand. It looks better in person

We didn't have one. The cake had enough going on that it wasn't necessary. My cake was also very heavy, and the wood circle thing the baker put it on was about 24" in diameter (at least) so it would have taken a very large, sturdy stand.

You could do a crate with some fabric on top so that the cake is raised up higher than the table at least.

This is something I never considered or thought about and I'm a baker. I'm not having one. Although a relatively small expense, not something I care about.

I would skip it. Ive never been to a wedding that I remembered whether or not the cake was on a stand. Cut it and serve it. It will look fine in the 2 pictures you take with it.

I was going to say it would be cheaper to just go buy a cake stand at a place like Michaels. But no you don't need a cake stand

I have been debating this too! I have found cheap cake stands at Home Goods. TJ Maxx, and the Christmas Tree Shop. I use them when I have parties, even casual ones, to make the food table look more interesting. If one I already have is large and stable enough for my bottom tier I will use it. If not, I wouldn't spend more than $40 on one, and I'd be sure to use it again when I entertain.

I got mine at Cracker Barrel of all places because my mother is a manager at one. They don't have them all the time but sometimes they do. It's jadeite green glass, sort of a pillar in the middle, about a foot tall, and then a simple round on top. It's exactly what I wanted. I had been seeing them in antique and gift shops for a couple hundred bucks or more. This one started at $40 (I think, it was a few months ago and she bought it for me as a gift) and then she got a discount too. Personally, I would never pay that much to rent a cake stand. You can find them all over to buy for cheaper and then you can use it for years when you have people over to put cake or cookies on or even as a plant stand (I have an orchid in my kitchen on a small cake stand and it's really cute). Try going to antique stores, flea markets, places like Ross, little gift boutiques, etc (etsy if you're desperate but you will likely pay more due to shipping). You'll probably find one in no time at all, though if you don't have one I don't think anyone would notice that either. To me they are 100% optional and while they are cute it certainly isn't tacky not to have one and people will be focused on the cake itself so they likely won't even notice the lack of stand.
