I had my very first successful alterations appointment on Tuesday. [THANK YOU 2ND BRIDE FOR YOUR RECOMMENDATION!!!] Surprisingly, it was the very first time I had ever looked at, or even thought about a bustle. My wedding gown is quite simple so I had a difficult time deciding on something I liked. If I was crazy I’d just take scissors and cut off the train after the ceremony! I haven’t seen too many posts on WW regarding the different types so I thought this would be a good post to see what everyone else plans to do.

As we all probably know, Bustles are used to lift the long trains of wedding gowns off the floor. Typically it’s lifted with buttons, pearls or ties (ribbon in my case) to create a style that’s practical. There are different types of bustle options. What type are you planning on getting?

I have a 7point under bustle on my dress; it's fantastic. You'd never know that it had a train (:

I was somewhat aware of the different types but it's so useful to see examples. I definitely prefer the over bustles.

I am getting an American bustle. It's the best for my style of dress.

@ Jess - I agree, a 1 point over bustle would cover the beautiful back to that dress. You would need some kind of under bustle to show off the beautiful details on that dress.... like the Double and Triple French Bustle.

Mine is going to be an under bustle. I just went in to pick up my dress today and that's what she said she would do with my dress.

I love the fact that I wasn't the only one questioning different bustles!

Here's a good example for those with lace:

    1. before

    2. after

I had the seamstress do a few different types at my fitting to see what i liked. I eventually went with a 1 point over bustle for the satin underlayer, and a 3 point over bustle for the lace overlayer

I hadn't even thought about a bustle. My dress has buttons on the way down the train..I really like the look of the under bustle but don't know how that would look....

Smiley sad Austrian looks so nice! But my mom would just want to kill me or throw me in the ocean if she had to deal with it! Thanks for bringing it up. And of course I never think of $$$$

Here's a pic of front and back of my gown. What do you think would look best?

@Tammy, I think a french would look great but you should ask your seamstress to try out a few styles to see what looks best!

Here's a french with a similar shaped gown:

My only advice on bustles would be to make sure whoever is going to be bustling your dress (be it your mom or MOH) learn how to bustle it from your seamstress. Speaking as a former MOH/BM, yes it may be 'just as easy as putting that hook through this loop' the way it lays, the way the fabric folds, are very important to the way the bustle looks. If you're going to all the trouble of getting a particular bustle put in to look a certain way, make sure it's worth your while and will look that way.

Great post, I love seeing all of the different types of bustles. I never knew there were so many different types. My seamstress was like we could do the french or the american! She showed me what both would look like and I went with the american, I just loved the way it looked.

And definitely great advice by Judith F. I was thinking the same thing. My sister was my MOH so she came with me to all of my appointments and she was there to watch the seamstress do the bustle. It is important that you don't wait until the day of the ceremony to have your MOH figure your bustle out. You do pay so much for it and you want to look beautiful.

@FMC, my mom is going to be attending my last fitting. Basically anyone who is attending your wedding can tag along to see the correct way to pin your dress up after the ceremony. :o)
