Learning calligraphy for invites/how much did your calligraphy cost?

PrincessPotato, on January 14, 2017 at 3:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 24

We recently received a quote for $1200 for calligraphy (300 total envelopes) and while I think it's of course reasonable to pay a professional a decent amount for their work, it seems like quite a lot to spend.

I work at an art university and can take classes for free and they happen to be offering calligraphy so I've signed up! However, my mother immediately told me it was a terrible idea to try and do the calligraphy myself. I've tried calligraphy in the past and wasn't awful, plus I have a year until my wedding.

Has anyone done their own calligraphy? How did it turn out?

And for those that paid a professional, how much was it? Thanks!

They have stencils for calligraphy in a kit I got at Anthropologie. I use them all the time and they're perfect! It is called the Belle Calligraphy Kit..it also comes with instructions on how to do calligraphy and it comes with pens.

I was going to, and was getting decent at it, but my carpal tunnel has worsened so I am going to have them done now.

Etsy. I found a person who will do them for $1/envelope. Works for us.

I am printing names and addresses in calligraphy on plain printer paper, then tracing them onto my envelopes using a light tracebox from amazon. It works great and looks AWESOME. I certainly couldn't have done it free hand, but it was something I really wanted to do myself so it's the best of both worlds!

I'm only sending out about 40 invitations so it's not a huge amount of time or pain for me.

Also, are you really sending out 300 invitations? With spouses and plus ones that would be like 600 guests!! I definitely wouldn't do it myself for that many.

I did calligraphy when I was in grade school. I decided to pick it up again since June last year and practice regularly. I've become obsessed and doing on everything. Will be starting to address envelopes this month. Sorry on mobile but here's an example of my calligraphy on mirror for our welcome sign. So happy the way it turned out.

I'm learning calligraphy. Not sure if for the invites but definitely for the signs and table numbers.

I consider myself artsy and I did it. It took me awhile to find what I loved, but it was an area to save money and overall I'm happy.

I taught myself brush lettering. These were how our STDs turned out. I only had 70ish envelopes to do, though. It took two weeks to address them. I'm currently working my way through our wedding invitation envelopes now.

@EM- We're doing 150 invitations with inner and outer envelopes so it's 300 total- we're only having 220 guests!

My SIL got it in her mind that she had to do her invitations by hand. She was an art major and is now a photographer. She gave up halfway through and didn't invite half the people because she was so tired of doing the calligraphy.

I spent more money on calligraphy lessons than I did on what I ended up paying someone to do my envelopes bc I wasn't satisfied with my work. The person that did mine only charged .25 per envelope though. She's a teacher & so am I so I think she charged me less than her normal rate. I had about 40 invites.

I have been debating this too!! Looks like I'll be checking out Etsy. I'm not really artistic so I know there isn't a way I can do it myself haha

I'm doing what @BlueHen did and doing brush lettering, I found guides online. It's relaxing, so I don't mind taking the time to do it.

We bought our invitations from an Etsy vendor. Their printing machine did the addresses for me, in a calligraphy-type font. I know the US postal service wasn't happy about the readability, of the font, since they run things through scanning machines now.

Hubby's cousin did the escort cards, in calligraphy, for us for free. I didn't talk to her beforehand, about the font. It was difficult to read (like Olde English?).

I would love to learn calligraphy. It looks so gorgeous.

Maybe start with a smaller project (like someone mentioned, signs or table numbers) before committing to your invitations to make sure you like it and are confident.

    Good luck!

I have lousy handwriting, so hired my MOH's mom to hand address our envelopes. It wasn't calligraphy, but she had pretty handwriting.
