Learning calligraphy for invites/how much did your calligraphy cost?

We recently received a quote for $1200 for calligraphy (300 total envelopes) and while I think it's of course reasonable to pay a professional a decent amount for their work, it seems like quite a lot to spend. I work at an art university and can take classes for free and they happen to be offering calligraphy so I've signed up! However, my mother immediately told me it was a terrible idea to try and do the calligraphy myself. I've tried calligraphy in the past and wasn't awful, plus I have a year until my wedding.

Has anyone done their own calligraphy? How did it turn out?

And for those that paid a professional, how much was it? Thanks!

I've actually learning calligraphy myself as well to address my envelopes.

I am having my envelopes addressed by someone else. Being done on Etsy; the girl is charging $2 per envelope. Thought that was reasonable. Saves me the stress and trouble of having to learn how to do it my self.

I have a Silhouette Cameo machine. You can buy an attachment to hold a pen and then print in different fonts. It's technically printed, but written with a pen, so it looks handwritten.

I'm taking a class in it now! It's a lot of fun, and there's a real satisfaction in learning an art form and creating something beautiful. I think you'll enjoy it if you try it!
