Last-minute wedding dresses

Jessica, on December 27, 2017 at 9:52 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 10

Hi all,

I went to pick up my wedding dress yesterday - getting married in early April - and I don't like it. I am devastated. Do I have time to get a new one off the rack (w/ alterations done quickly by a bridal seamstress)? If so, where would you recommend? I am in NYC.

Thank you,

Jessica

    Thanks, Becca : )

I got this dress very quickly, mostly bc my mom was crazy about it. My mom has a lot of issues (she is sick) and this was the fourth dress I tried on. She wanted to buy it for me, and I sort of went w/ the flow, but I should have said, "Hold up, let me try on some more." She went THROUGH THE ROOF w this dress, but honestly, it isn't me. I don't like that it's tight, and I wanted sleeves and something w a higher neck. It's just not me. I even look miserable in the pics. I also feel like it's a little too girly and I am not that girly. THere's just so much dress. Anyway, here goes. I made an appt at BHLDN for next week, but I think it might kill my mom. She knows how uncomfortable I am in the dress, so it's a little awkward.

I would suggest David’s bridal. I ordered my dress and it was in 3 weeks later

Bhldn is a good choice. I ordered mine and it arrived within a week! For what it's worth, the dress you have is beautiful. Your mom may be disappointed but you have to feel beautiful in your gown. I'm sure once you find "the one", she will see the joy all over you!

Most any bridal shop can sell a dress off the rack, but it will more depend on alterations if it will fit your timeline. You can also search ebay or etsy for people selling their dresses. Or go vintage! Some online stores like jcrew or bdhln are good places too.

I’d also suggest David’s bridal. I had about 5 weeks from when I decided I hated my dress to my wedding day! They were able to order a dress in my size and have alterations done, with a week to spare!! I know not everyone has had great experiences with David’s bridal, but I had no issues and couldn’t have been happier with my decision.

It is a beautiful dress and it looks amazing on you, but if it's not you it's not you. BHLDN or David's as other PP's suggested, but you may want to check local salons as well. A lot of times they have sample sales and you can take them home that day.

I highly recommend two sample sale places in NYC.

    1) the Bridal garden - it's a bridal non profit that receives donations from designers and give away profits to a school in Brooklyn. I walked out with my dress for $1,000. It was retailed at more than $8k. There are many different styles and sizes. Most dresses are in great conditions. They have in house seamstresses too.

    2) Glamour Closet - another sample sale room with lots of nice options. Prices start a bit higher than the bridal garden though.
