I know I'm planning early, but with a modest $6k budget and and my MOH three hours from me, I'm gonna need to be creative about how to plan this party! So far the best advice I've been given has been to book my caterer when I book my venue. Makes sense to me! But when I looked at the prices per plate from most of my local places and the suggested services, I nearly died! Anywhere between $25 and $32 per plate means that just the food would cost as much or more than the venue! Ohhhh no no no. That won't do. So I got to thinking about what to feed people that was filling, cheap, and wouldn't leave people hangry. Then it dawned on me - Lasagna! 8D No, it's not really chic or elegant or match our theme, but everyone likes lasagna! So that's what I'm thinking maybe? Serve family style like I do when I'm hosting dinner, every table gets a big pan of lasagna, salad, and bread with oil. Cookie table. Wine. 70 guests fed for less than $300. Lasagna is a wedding food, right? Smiley xd

This place looks like it has some dinner options starting at about $12 per person, with both Italian and Mexican menus to choose from:

@OP, I was in the same situation. However, I found a small local Italian restaurant that caters and is doing my wedding reception for $6.50 per person!!!!

    It includes:

Homemade Italian Beef or Italian Sausage or Both PLUS Mostaccioli or Spaghetti w/ Marinara Sauce PLUS a choice of 2 sides: Tossed Garden Salad, Roasted Potato, More Pasta, Garlic Bread

My advice is call smaller local restaurants most of them will cater for cheaper because they are small.

I live in Illinois but definitely start checking near you!!

No way. I won't touch on the self catering because others have already done that. I am extremely allergic to dairy in all forms. I would spend time getting ready for your wedding, spend money to travel, probably get FH a new suit, pay for a hotel room. Then I would show up and not be able to eat anything. I would probably just get really drunk and be really frustrated. Find a caterer and have more options.

Sage- if Vicki D had violated the Community guidelines, a mod ( Hi WWLaura!) would have flagged the post and it would have been marked as such. Since it still there, she did not violate any guidelines.

Lasagna to me is a bridal shower/baby shower food not wedding reception food...I'm also one of those people who absolutely loathes the stuff so it's a hard, hard no from me.

Also a huge giant no to self catering or a friendor...please hire a catering company Smiley smile there are options for inexpensive ways to cater food such as BBQ or Italian, you could also look into a local restaurant as well.

My venue alone with cocktail hour, Venetian, dinner and bar included is 20 thousand, I'm grateful I can afford a 50K wedding but Jesus if u can't even feed ur guests, I wouldn't even bother. Honestly to me that's embarrassing

Sage, self catering is never great. So many things can go wrong.. Don't give out shit advice.

I can't eat lasagna... Not won't CAN'T. There needs to be options for those that don't like or can't eat lasagna.

Seshanna, you've been given some good leads on professional caterers in your area. Please take the advice of everyone but Sage and have a catered meal. You're responsible for the health and well-being of your guests, and that means not taking chances with the food.

Self catering should never go over well on any site. It's dangerous, basically illegal, many venues won't even allow it, and you shouldn't make you friends and family work on your wedding day.

    Next....

Sage, powerful lecture, but when the bride to be has built her lasagna foundation on words and phrases like "when I looked at the prices per plate from most of my local places and the suggested services, I nearly died! ", and she nearly died because she was shocked to learn that hosting her guests with meals that cost $24 - $32 was fair market value in her area, umm. we're in the catering swamp. So instead of asking, "How do I manage hosting my guests with a fair market value meal (God...so cheap)", she said, "I won't consider cutting the guest list." From there, the hostess with the mostest decided that a carb heavy, potentially guest problematic (vegetarians, vegans, gluten intolerants, and/or diabetic) meal will do just fine...tray after home made (undoubtedy hairy) lasagna. She's bragging about it, lol.

Are you actually standing by your analogy that food service is the same thing as color choice? Okay, because pink causes spikes in blood sugar, vomiting, diarrhea, sweating, cramping, and fainting -- and for those who have moral issues with meat lasagna, well, screw it...let them eat pink. Right?

Somebody needs to reassess their maturity level? Why? Because trays of cheap, filling (the OP's words) trays of food are more mature than working, saving, and waiting to host a wedding until the couple can afford to offer several menu options that will delight every guest.

Wanna argue the validity of opinions? Donald Trump is president. Let's start there.

You actually dod not specify. You said: "They'll be fed, people on this app are so high maintenance it's ridiculous."... that implies we're high maintenance because we disagree with self catering.... I've gotten sick at almost every potluck event i've been to... Why?? Because safety is not a priority.. refrigeration and proper storage isn't done...

I can't eat lasagna.. If i do my blood sugar and blood pressure will crash and i will fucking faint at your wedding.. Sounds fun, right?? Rachel is right, you need to take guests and possibly having a diabetic guest into account.

I originally thought about self catering. The risk of botulism or other food bourne illness was too terrifying. Hosting a cocktail night for 20-30 people is different than a wedding dinner for 70. Please consider a caterer or cutting the guest list.
