Lasagna add the dinner entree?

Seshanna, on July 20, 2017 at 6:20 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 90

I know I'm planning early, but with a modest $6k budget and and my MOH three hours from me, I'm gonna need to be creative about how to plan this party! So far the best advice I've been given has been to book my caterer when I book my venue. Makes sense to me! But when I looked at the prices per plate from most of my local places and the suggested services, I nearly died! Anywhere between $25 and $32 per plate means that just the food would cost as much or more than the venue! Ohhhh no no no. That won't do. So I got to thinking about what to feed people that was filling, cheap, and wouldn't leave people hangry. Then it dawned on me - Lasagna! 8D No, it's not really chic or elegant or match our theme, but everyone likes lasagna! So that's what I'm thinking maybe? Serve family style like I do when I'm hosting dinner, every table gets a big pan of lasagna, salad, and bread with oil. Cookie table. Wine. 70 guests fed for less than $300. Lasagna is a wedding food, right? Smiley xd

Not if you're making it yourself.

Please don't self-cater OR make your friends and family cook for you.

    Nope, nope, nope.

    No to self catering.

$25-32 is pretty reasonable, depending on your location.

And not sure what your MOH being 3 hours away has to do with anything.

$25-32 per plate is extremely reasonable.

Not everyone likes lasagna. Some people can't eat gluten or flour, so only pasta options won't work. Some people don't eat meat OR dairy so lasagna isn't a great sole choice.

Also if you're self catering your wedding.... that is a disaster waiting to happen.

Your catering prices are extremely reasonable. Cut the guest list. Food and bar should be 50% of budget roughly.

Also my MOH is four hours away. Plan your own wedding.

Getting married in the central VA area and for food alone I'm paying $43 a plate. That doesn't include labor & servers. With labor, servers, etc it jumps to about $110 a person. You could always serve a veggie lasagna or veggie pasta instead.

    1. Why does your MOH location have anything to do with this issue?

    2. Please reconsider your menu/self catering options.

    3. If cost is an issue, cut your guest list so you can hire a caterer.

I'm not sure how much your venue is, but our food and alcohol is 5x more than the venue. I think it makes absolute sense for it to be more. Roughly half of our budget is for food and alcohol.

Lasagna could work (made and served by a caterer), but you'd need more things with it too accommodate everyone.

Cut the list in half. You cannot cater it yourself.

I don't really get this concept of inviting people you can't afford and being shocked at what dinner might cost. An entire fast food meal costs 10.00.... and in my area? 25.00 will get you an appetizer and a glass of wine. Maybe.

You're looking at 15 months from now. Start saving.

Ran out of room on the post to explain better, sorry! Smiley xd My MOH being far from me just makes it harder to plan things, that's all. But her hubby offered to do the catering if I could think of a main that was easy to mass-cook, and lasagna was what jumped out lol I'm the only person in my family/friends group that can't eat gluten, and veggie lasagna is a specialty. Our guest list is about 70, so it'll probably be about 50 that come :3 But I'm just throwing things at the wall to see what sticks. *ba dum tss!!*

That's a no from me, if it's not being catered, it's not happening.

If you can't afford to properly serve your guests, you need to cut down your guest list. NEVER use "friendors" either, especially if they are doing the "catering".

If it's not a legit company with a contract, it shouldn't be happening for a wedding that size. That's just screaming for a disaster.

    Nope. Nope. Big Nope.

Also, I LOVE Italian food and pastas, my FH is actually Italian, but I can not stand lasagna, let alone veggie lasagna? Nope! I'll leave and drive my happy ass to Olive Garden.

Don't make a guest cook, even if he offers and don't force people to eat veggie lasagna.

Get your food catered by a pro. end of Story.

Ah, Seshanna, I'm one of those folks who actually hates lasagna...sorry. Even without touching on the issues with self-catering, it's always best to have some options for your guests. There are more people than you'd realize who may have a gluten allergy (I think there are six on my guest list).

Some of the suggestions for cutting costs that I've learned from WW are: push back the wedding and/or cut the guest list. I'm doing both of these. I originally wanted our wedding to be April 2018 and I've moved it to September 2018. I'm whittling our list from 250 to roughly 115/130.

I'm sending you good vibes that you'll figure this jazz out Smiley smile

No self catering.....and to answer your question...I'd pick through it and not enjoy it if I were a guest, I don't like ricotta because of the texture. I can't be the only one.

@seshanna, i get that you are trying to save money but the self-catering thing is just going to be more trouble than it's worth. and the prices you were offered are definitely a good deal! or research other caterers if you don't want to pay that much and see if you could do a BBQ deal or something more simple. but it's the same thing celia said about the cost of food. if you try and cut corners, the food won't be great or there won't be enough or it will be cold cause you don't have the proper equipment to heat it.

believe me, i thought i could do a wedding for 10K in the bay area for about a 100 people. i quickly realized that wasn't happening and i upped the budget to 15K, which is more reasonable and can be done for sure. you have to play around, research a lot! i researched for WEEKS to find a venue that was what we liked and fell within our price range. we lucked out since they catered as well and were very reasonable in terms of price. we are paying $32/plate and we are serving breakfast, if that gives you an idea on cost! bite the bullet and go with a caterer, i promise you, it will make things SO much less stressful!

Try to lookinf into BBQ places and get quotes, or eve. Italian restaurants. You may be able to get the per plate lower this way and still have a catered meal.

I've never heard of the food costing less than renting the venue. Why would you even think that's how it's supposed to go?
