Labor Day Wedding? Good or Bad??

Liza , on June 30, 2011 at 1:40 PM Posted in Planning 1 44

Backstory:

Originally I wanted to have my wedding in early summer because I want to get married outside. We penciled in a couple of dates at my favorite venue, and they were supposed to call if someone else wanted to book those dates they would let us have first choice. Well we were out of cell range camping for about a week, I didn’t even think about it, and while we were gone….they called. So I missed those dates. BooHoo. But I’m over it.

Now early summer is totally booked and I’m thinking – What about Labor Day weekend? I know it’s a holiday but . . .the weather is usually great that time of year, everyone has an extra day off work anyway, it’s not a huge travel weekend so I don’t think hotels/flights will be that much more expensive….plus if we send out the Save the Dates early enough, people will have time to plan.

Thoughts? Good/Bad experiences with Labor Day weddings? All input is appreciated!!

I'm getting married Labour Day Weekend, and I've come to find it's a very popular wedding weekend!

most of my guests are happy with the date, it gives them extra travel time (most people are a couple hours away) and it gives them an extra day to rest after the party!

Do you have a lot of couples with kids coming to the wedding? Normally that is the "last weekend of summer" and then the kids go back to school (at least in my area).

I think if people know early enough, its not a big deal. I had a wedding last summer on that weekend and it worked out just fine. It was nice to have that extra day to recoop!

We were actually trying to have a Labor Day weekend so that our guests wouldn't be rushed thru the weekend, but our choice venue was not available. My only concern is family and friends driving after the reception. There tends to be ALOT of drunks on the road that weekend and lots of police patrols etc. Just remind everyone to be alert!

We specifically booked that week end because of a lot of out of towners. They can travel without actually taking time off from work (wedding is on Sunday) or school.

If most of your guests are local, super bad! If most of your guests have to travel, it's not that bad. Some places (flights, hotels, rental cars) will need to be booked well in advance and may have a premium. Some venues will charge a premium for holiday weekends as well.

But we always travel on labor day weekend- since it's a 3 day weekend. We go to see FH's kids. No wedding would make us cancel that trip.

As a guest, I would be slightly annoyed- but if I cared enough about the couple, I'd consider going.

Most of the people who have kids are right in the area, less than 30 mins away. Almost everyone invited is within a 3-4 hr driving radius.

Wow, I never thought of it as a huge travel weekend, not like Thanksgiving…maybe because my family stays at home, BBQs, and drinks all weekend. *grin*

In Jersey it is known as a huge travel weekend bc everyone goes down the shore or has a party or something. If your guests care enough about you, they will come that weekend, but u might be better off waiting 2 weeks and having it on a Saturday night...

We're getting married Labor Day weekend and haven't heard any complaints. It just happened to be the most convenient date for us. 90% of those invited are traveling from out of town, so I figured we would get quite a few noes no matter what date we chose. I've actually been surprised by how many people have already purchased tickets though!

Like Meghan said, if people want to be there they will find a way, even if it is inconvenient for them.

Im getting married Labor Day weekend and it has turned out great for my local family and my out of town. My local family gets together for a big cookout every year for this weekend, so this is just something extra for them. And my out of town family will be coming from NY and NJ so they are using this as a last vacation for the summer. If people want to come they will be there.

We got married labor day weekend and it worked out great. Both our families were more than happy to be there and the ones that lived out of town were happy that it was during a holiday weekend so they could fly in and not have to fly back home the next day. So I obviously see nothing wrong with a labor day weekend wedding.

As a Labor day weekend Bride myself I can tell you I have done the research and thought people travel labor day weekend its by car so the airlines do not charge a premium for that weekend. (you can also check out airline sites and they will show it is not a peak weekend.) Most of my friends are happy to have it that weekend - we are doing the sunday so people can come in on sat and out on monday and not miss work. but Meghan is right, if they are all local they may resent you taking the weekend from them. I would strongly recommend you book now though, I booked in July last year and several places were already booked out for that weekend. Also send the save the dates in January and you shoul be fine.

    good luck

I'm getting married Easter weekend and I don't think it's anything wrong with it. If you have OOT guest it's even better for them.

I'm getting married Labor day weekend of next year too. That was the only date my venue had available for sept. I had the same concerns as you, but I just went with it. The people who care about you will go, no matter what.

I went to a Labor day weekend wedding last year. Luckily it was a Friday so it didn't ruin my whole weekend.

Remember, your wedding day is not as important to everyone else as it is to you. When there are limited holiday (i.e. 3 day) weekends a year, I don't want to waste one on a wedding. Lots of people like to take a 3 day trip and putting a wedding in the middle of that spoils it.

I am not a fan of any holiday weddings. Why would you take away a Christmas, Thanksgiving or any other holiday from your guests?

We are getting married labor day weekend this year.

Before selecting our date, we polled most of our families and asked them their opinion.

Conclusion was that we needed a long weekend due to the fact that 200 out of our 231 guests invited must travel minimum 4 hours all the way up to 12 hours to attend our wedding. 90% of them are arriving on the Thursday evening, wedding is Saturday and they are all heading back on the Monday.

We have incorporated many family activities for those who are coming early, so that they can use the time as their last family vacation for the summer.

P.S Hello all you date twins

    From Ontario Canada Eh!

My only concern would be travel. I believe the cost of travel goes up on holiday weekends, especially those that have a high travel rate. Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. I'd check to see what the airfare is like compared to airfare in June, and see if it's compreable (you'll have to figure my spelling, IE doesn't auto correct). If it is, then check hotels, and if they are, then I say go for it! It's always great to have that extra day

I'm a Labor Day bride and chose this date specifically b/c of the holiday. It is a long weekend and the wedding is on that Sunday so people can choose when they want to arrive. My family is about 3 hours away and FH's is about 5 and everyone loved the date b/c it gave them the opportunity to have plenty of travel time but it allows them to see family they might not have otherwise seen.
