Karaoke? Contests? Games?

Danielle, on January 22, 2013 at 10:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I'm debating on having karaoke at my reception. The event is very NON-traditional and only slightly formal... (wait, what makes something formal vs semi-formal or casual?)

My guests are a lively bunch, or at least most of them are, and we are having an open bar. How do you feel about Karaoke? Trashy, or ok? My reception will be from about 730-midnight so I'm worried that if I don't have something other than music playing for that long, it is going to get really dull... What about games or contests? Limbo? I need ideas to spice things up and make them lively! I don't want to spend all this time and effort for it to be a bore.

Karaoke sounds like fun! Maybe have some pre-screened songs so no one sings anything too inappropriate? At one wedding I attended, the bride and groom asked guests to sing them a song with the word "love" in it to get them to kiss. It was adorable!

Only you know your crowd. Personally, it's not for me and I wouldn't participate if this happened at a wedding. In fact, I'd be bored if it did because I absolutely would not participate... which is why you really just have to judge your crowd. If your friends and family would love it then go for it!

What about doing a "karaoke hour"? Maybe only have it open for an hour or so? I like the idea of suggesting a category to keep it appropriate!

I agree with Courtney.. it's definitely your call. But like she also said, it's not for me. I would not participate if there was karaoke. I'm just thinking about all of the weddings I've been to and very few of them have been boring! An open bar and a good DJ should be plenty, but if you want something extra, go for it! Smiley smile

What about about contests like limbo? Challenges? Lawn games or wedding bingo?

Or is it best just to have a DJ and leave it at that?

I am a karaoke nerd!! That is one of the questions I am always asked "Are you having karaoke at your wedding?" Seriously I love it but here is the problem. Not everyone does karaoke. Yes it is fun but you may end up with having the same 10 people sing over and over. That is not fun and that is why I am not having it Smiley sad

I think a DJ is alsways the best bet! They will play to the crowd and make sure everyone is having fun!Weddings are usually just music anyway, if you want to add a game then do that but don't make this like a birthday party just do 1 or 2 crowd games and the rest DJ and dancing!

My cousin had karaoke at her wedding and it was a blast! I may be a smidge biased because I LOVE karaoke, but even people you never thought would do it, got up and sang. If you think it's something that your bunch would be into, definitely do it!

If you were getting married in the fall I would suggest pumpkin bowling for a contest. We do that every year for our Halloween party and it's a HUGE hit.

We are having karaoke at our reception but it will no be consistent all night long. We are also incorporating a lot of line dances and even a trivia game about us where we will give out small gifts for correct answers.

I am so not into karaoke, but would be all about playing some "Minute to Win It" type games!

There is nothing I hate more than Karaoke. Maybe torchure but I've never been torchered so not sure if it would be better or worse.

I don't do Karaoke because I can't sing but I always have watching. Plus if you have an open bar it could get interesting with performance. I say go for it if you think people will have fun,

I don't know... To me, nothing sounds worse than listen to a drunk relative butcher a popular song.

I don't think you'd have anything to worry about with having a good DJ- they know how to read the crowd and keep the energy up... At my friend's wedding recently, we danced all night and I couldn't walk right for a few days after. But, they also had a photobooth, which was a blast to break up the dancing.

It's a phenomenal idea! I'm doing a Karaoke cocktail hour (or 2) to entertain our guest while we take pics. We love karaoke & I come from a singing family. To keep it lively & appropriate, we will be pre selecting the songs available.
