Just got engaged! Possibly short engagement

Victoria, on December 15, 2022 at 3:36 PM Posted in Planning 0 3
We got engaged Dec 4, 2022. We’ve told our friends and family in person but are waiting to make an “official” social media announcement after we get our engagement photos (currently planning on the week after Christmas). We are having our first meeting with our pastor this weekend.

I’ve known I’d be getting engaged since August and have essentially unofficially put my entire wedding plan together during those 4 months. We were hoping to be engaged by late September or early October but the ring took longer than planned.
Anyway, when we talked about it back in August we wanted to have an April 2023 wedding. Since it’s December and no official planning has been done I feel like April may be too soon. I’m thinking we should plan for late May/June or possibly July. FH still thinks April is a viable option. We have out of town family and I just don’t think it’s enough time for them to plan traveling.
I made up my mind months ago that we would have a simple and low budget wedding - no matter how many months we have to save or how much money is given to us by family members. I currently have our entire wedding budget sitting in my savings account (I started saving a while ago haha). So a long engagement for the sake of saving a required amount of money isn’t necessary.
So - my plan is that we will have an afternoon (not meal time) ceremony followed by a ~90 min cake and punch reception. All at our local church. That’s how my mom did and it that’s how have I planned on doing my wedding since I was a teenager. Honestly, I could probably plan that in two months (if the dress wasn’t an issue lol).
Any thoughts on how many months would be an appropriate engagement time? Also am I underestimating the time it will take to plan a church hall cake and punch wedding? I’ve gotten mixed reactions from people I know in real life. Some people say even waiting til June is too short and others say go for it since they’ve planned bigger weddings in shorter amounts of time.
Thanks!

As long as the church is available, I don’t think it matters how far in advance you plan it. With out of town guests, you just have to be ready for people not being able to take off. However, most people are not booking flights and accommodations until about 2 months out anyway. I would maybe check in with some of your out of town VIPs and see if they would be able to swing it and go from there.

I think it would be easy to plan a church wedding and cake and punch reception at the church in a very short amount of (like a week!). I think the only concern would be giving out-of-town guests time to plan. However, I think there tends to be a higher decline rate for cake and punch receptions when it comes to out-of-town guests, so it may not be that huge of an issue. I would pick the date that you and your fiancé really want, and go with it!

Those who love and support you will be there regardless of the time frame. Keep in mind, people travel on short notice for many things. Have your day exactly as you want. No one gets to dictate what you do or length of your engagement for that matter. Congratulations
