Just a Friendly Reminder: Proper Spelling and Grammar

Justine, on July 11, 2011 at 8:04 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 64

I just wanted to gently remind everyone that proper spelling and grammar makes it much easier for the members posting on the forums to understand each other. If you're looking for pertinent and helpful advice refraining from using ALL CAPS and confusing they're, their, and there and not using realtor and a retailer interchangeably, will go a long way.

Thank you so much for this thread! I have been seeing so many threads and posts where there is zero punctuation and a zillion exclamation points and/or question marks. It is incredibly hard to understand what someone is saying when it is one long run-on sentence.

TIP: "Your" is possessive, as in "Is that your jacket?"

    "You're" means "you are"

Sorry, that's my giant pet peeve.

Also, there is a big difference between ESL folks and those who just refuse to use punctuation, proper spelling etc. English is a difficult language and we don't expect everyone to be perfect.

***ROFL, right after I posted this I noticed a giant spelling error***

Misuse of "your" and "you're" is a huge pet peeve of mine too. It makes me cringe.

I hate when people say "myself" or "I" when they should say "me".

It's all in context people... c'mon now!!

All members with Salt and Pepper shakers as their icons should personalize their photo, as well! It doesn't have to be a picture of yourself, but it is really hard to keep everyone straight when they look the same. Thanks, Justine for the post!

I am pretty sure if Haley C saw fit to refer to someone as " the longest living Realtor Troll.... " in a China Advertising thread, there was a reason why. I am kind of a "Grammar Nazi" myself, so I don't appreciate being used as an example of "what not to do" when I was only following information in another thread...

Oh my gosh yes! Now, I'm not saying I'm perfect, but at least I remember 2nd grade spelling and grammar!

@Mrs.Welsh - "alot" drives me nuts too. I forgot about that one!

Adding to the list: It's* "I would HAVE," not "I would OF."

*Anyone who gets mad at "it's" vs "its".....please come talk to me because I NEVER get that one right!

As annoying as it can be, I understand that everyone's level of education or intelligence may not be as high as others, not to mention those that are ESL. Sometimes it is as simple as typing while emotionally upset or distracted by their children and they didn't take the time to double check. Whatever the issue is, I would hate for someone on here to feel insecure about how they post if it isn't something they have control over.

@Savanna - it isn't necessarily about mistakes that everyone makes from time to time. I am by no means a perfect speller, nor do I use perfect grammar all the time. Plus, if you read my first post, you would see that ESL folks are exempt from this. We are getting frustrated from this type of post:

i am so excited to be getting married what kind of dress do you think i should get my wedding is in the winter and i love the color red my parents are paying for it should i have an open bar?

Plus, with all the spelling and grammar checks online, there is always some kind of control. People who take the time and care to at least half-$$ check his/her posts will be taken more seriously. Many of the brides are suspected of being tolls when their threads/posts are riddled with spelling errors and horrendous grammar.

    Stacy:

"It's" is the contraction for "It IS." Such as "It's a mystery."

"Its" is possessive. Such as "Put everything in its place."

Using apostrophes for plurals also gives me a tic.

Edit: I make grammar mistakes myself, but there are just a few that really get to me.

Thank you, Nicole W. I knew that "it is" the contraction for "it is." It was the possession that I could never remember. Grammar lesson for today complete!

@Candice, I am killing myself over here because every time I post something, I then find at least two major errors that would sooo get me called out on my comments! LOL
