Jumping the Broom...Broom

TheNewMrsJ, on August 19, 2013 at 2:25 AM Posted in Planning 0 19

Any suggestions on where I can get a broom for our wedding this Saturday. Does anyone know if Target,Walmart, Hobby Lobby etc...carries them?

@Megan -- she actually needs something more decorative than a regular broom, typically they look like the picture below

Future MrsJ - Hobby Lobby carries them! Also, amazon has a basic one that you may be able to decorate for only about 15 dollars -- it also can arrive by Wednesday:

Garden stores often have decorative ones too.

I got a cinnamon broom at Cracker Barrel and I think Publix carries them, too.

Not to sound dumb but....what is the purpose (or reasoning) of the broom?

@AshleyG2013 - Jumping the broom is a popular African-American wedding tradition that symbolizes the sweeping away of the old and the welcoming of the new. The tradition dates back to the period of slavery during which slaves were not allowed to marry so they jumped the broom as a way of ceremonially uniting.

My sister got hers from Michael's, but any craft store should have them. Most of them are bare, so you'll have to decorate it yourself.

I'll be jumping the broom too!!! Are you ladies having something read to explain the symbolism of the broom? I've seen couples in the past have the pastor explain. I'm just curious.
