Jewish Holiday Messing with Wedding Plans

Shana, on September 10, 2010 at 5:01 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

So, my dad tells me today that the Saturday before my wedding next year is Yom Kippur. I'm Jewish, but I don't really practice. My family does to a small extent, but wouldn't blow off our wedding weekend for the holiday. I have Jewish friends, but they'll still come to the wedding. Except my MOH. My MOH is Jewish and while she's not that religious, she is about Yom Kippur. It didn't even occur to me to check the holiday, because the wedding is in October and the High Holy Days are always in September. Except next year. Except the year I'm getting married.

Now FH is really pissed off about the whole thing, because my MOH is saying she won't be able to come for the weekend. I'm just upset about the whole thing. We had planned to do the bachelor/ette party Friday, rehearsal Saturday and wedding Sunday. FH doesn't want to change our plans because of one person. Neither do I, but I'm upset that she won't be able to be there.

And I'm pissed off with the Hebrew calendar for being lunar.

Yikes. My best guy friend can't come to our reception next weekend because of Yom Kippur. I was pretty bummed. I'm sorry, Shana.

I don't know. Maybe in a year, she'll decide she can blow it off this one year. We'll see. I'm just upset now. How none of us realized this until right now, after the venue and photographer are both booked, I don't know.

    Shana,

As a fellow tribe member my advice to you is to change your date. Yom Kippur is the most holy day in our religion and it's not acceptable to get married on that day. Not to be mean but I honestly can't believe you would think it is okay to do. I am not very religious either, but I would never have my wedding on Yom Kippur.

And if you are getting a Rabbi to marry you, you won't find one who will perform the ceremony on Yom Kippur either.

You can change the date with same venue and photographer as long as you can't cancel on them.

The wedding's not on Yom Kippur. The wedding is on Sunday. Which is not Yom Kippur. I'm not changing my entire plan because one person can't make it for the pre-wedding festivities. I was just saying that I'm upset.

If the wedding was on Yom Kippur, I would change the date. But since Yom Kippur never falls on Friday or Sunday, as it's impossible in Judaism to have two days in a row where the preparation of food and the burial of the dead are prohibited. So the actual holiday of Yom Kippur is not interfering with my wedding.

So is she still coming to the actual wedding? If you want to keep the date where it is, just realize that you can't expect her to change her ritual for this. It's not a time to celebrate.
