Jared rings/pawnshop rings

#MRS.GILBERT, on January 5, 2013 at 6:25 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

Hello friends I was just wondering how other women feel about getting their engagement ring at a pawnshop vs Jared. Why?? And why not???. I personally don't care only if its what I like and has a warranty which they do. Like my mom said, who goes to garage sales said "one man garbage another mans treasure". I

think that's how it goes. Lol!!! Thanks for

your comments. #mydayNov2,13

If I got my ring from a pawn shop...honestly every time I'd look at it I'd think that mayyybe somewhere someone is missing this ring a LOT & is having problems. I know a lot of women that have had to pawn their rings & after yrs of them being gone are still heartbroken over it.

Only shop at a pawnshop if your educated about gold and stones. I would but that's because I worked at a jewelry store And I can tell the different between a solid gold ring and a hollow one (hollow is bad ) and I know stones like no other. But I absolutely would never send someone to one who has no knowledge of the industry!

No problem with it what so ever. However, you want to make sure the people you are dealing with are educated and reputable. My diamond was sold to my FH's shop and now it is mine and it is gorgeous.

Thanks everyone with your feed back I appreciate it. I guess I was really curious more then anything. We don't have money for a really expensive engagement ring but I am picky and I am not just wearing anything. But what blow my mind more then anything is the price is more then half what you pay at a name brand jeweler. They also test the diamonds. Thanks again everyone!!!

Get what you like, but if you get it at a pawn shop, ask them if you could show it to a jeweler first. Very often jewelry looks like 14k, but how do you know?

It's your wedding and your ring. Choose what you'd like. I designed my own ring through an artist on Etsy.com and it was way less expensive and more awesome (for me) than anything we could have gotten at Jared, for sure.

My hubby is an antique dealer. When he was thinking about proposing, he put out the word to the other local antique dealers that he was looking for a diamond ring. No one had what he wanted.

One day, an elderly gentleman walked into the shop to sell his late wife's engagement ring. DH loved the ring and paid more for it than he would have if he were buying it for resale. That evening, he showed the ring to my mom and me (without telling us his plans). Since he frequently showed us jewelry (just because we both like to look), I was not suspicious at all.

Several months later, when he proposed, he asked if I remembered the ring. Of course, I had a vague recollection of him showing us A ring, but could not have described it.

I feel the ring is blessed. The woman who wore it before me wore it for 50+ years.

My wedding band was purchased from a different elderly man whose wife had passed away. I know this because the engagement ring was too big for me and the wedding ring was too small for me.

BUT, the 2 rings are both platinum and look as though they were made to go together!

So, in addition to reputable pawn shops, also look at antique shops -- you may find your perfect ring there!

    @Nancy, that's a lovely story Smiley smile

But I wouldn't want a ring from a pawn shop. I agree with some of the others--many rings are pawned under duress, and I wouldn't want to profit from someone else's poverty.

Glad you made the choice! Here is my question though for those who say no. If a home you and your husband really wanted was orginally 200K and the couple who lived there before were selling it at half the price because their marriage didn't work out would you or would you not buy it? The answer is simple. Yes you would.

Though a pawnshop can be a risk if you remember to ask about the four C's of the diamond, cut, clarity, color, and carat without hesitation or better yet have the certificate for it and its what you want buy it. If they cant do that, leave it alone. Just like the home, if the realator is unable or unwilling to tell you, walk away.
