Ivory dress....white shirt?

TeeBee, on April 19, 2013 at 3:46 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

My dress is actually cafe so it looks like a really rich ivory. The men are wearing classic black tuxes with bow ties as I love this elegant classic look. The salesperson at the store when we were choosing the tuxes said the guys need to wear ivory shirts or my dress will look dirty in the pictures, so we went with that. But now we are second guessing. i LOVE the look of a crisp white shirt in a classic tux. Neither FH and I want the guys to wear ivory but we are worried it look bad if they don't. I'm going to ask at my dress fitting but I'm just wondering what everyone thinks. I posted a picture of my dress so you get an idea of the colour.

One of my best friend's wedding dress was a darker ivory/champagne color. All of the guys wore white shirts and it didn't clash at all (I just went back and looked at photos to check). What they did do though was that her husband had a ivoy/champagne vest and tie and a white shirt. The vest and tie complemented her dress well and pulled out those colors so her dress didn't stand out as being "dirty."

Thanks MrsO. I thought about that but I really want FH to wear a classic black tux and bow tie. But it's really good to know that they didn't clash in the photos!

Both my dress boutique & tux rental place told me the same thing. I don't see what they have to gain by lying about it. At our tux place, they had "Diamond White" which isn't quite white but not as dark as ivory, perhaps you'd like that better.

We were told the same thing. So, I'm going to have the guys try on ivory shirts to see how it looks, when that time comes.

My dress is ivory as well and FH is wearing and Ivory vest...

the guy at the tux shop pulled out an ivory shirt and it's looks killer with their black tuxes.

    but white should look fine.

My dress was darker than ivory as well (pearl) and DH and the GMs wore white shirts. I don't think my dress looked dirty at all. In some shots it's obvious my dress is not white, but I don't think it's "dirty" as it's the same color throughout. I don't have a pic with me otherwise I'd share. DH wore a white shirt with no vest and a bow tie too. My table clothes were white as well. Honestly, since your dress is darker than ivory I wouldn't worry about it. It would be hard to match and it's pretty obvious your dress is not white (which I love btw - beautiful color!).

I know a lot of wedding etiquette doesn’t exist anymore because we’re in a new age where being different and unique is praised upon, which I think is incredibly awesome BUT someone told me that no one is supposed to have a whiter color on then the bride. I’m assuming that relates to some virginal thing, but I don’t know if that’s still followed by people?

My dress was golden and hubby's shirt was white. I don't think it clashed in any of our pictures.

Edit- P.S. That dress is GORGEOUS!!

We are doing ivory for all groomsmen and FH. Our tux guy said the same thing that you don't want the white shirt because it will look too white next to an ivory dress.

I grabbed a pic from FB (my DH doesn't want to be posted online). My dress looks a little lighter in this pic. In others it looks a lot darker. Either way, I don't think it clashed or looked dirty.

Jessica, I always loved your dress! So beautiful!

ETA: I found a group shot. The GMs wore white shirts with silver vests and silver ties.

I am dealing with a similar problem thanks for posting this! Great information in here! My dress is a darker ivory called "candlelight" and I was advised to go with ivory shirts for the men too.

I was told that my fiance for sure needs to wear diamond white bc my dress is diamond white. I am going with there advice, because I would hate for it to look bad in the long run.

I'm still going to ask at my dress fitting, but I think I have decided ivory shirts for pictures and white shirts for the actual event. Smiley smile

I also had a non-white dress.... honestly i would call it like vanilla or something... i had a momentary freak out about the dress vs. white shirt issue... but i really wanted to stay with the white shirt... i love they way our combination turned out.
