Is your engagement ring an heirloom?

Mrs. Turner2B, on July 19, 2010 at 11:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 21

We've had many posts asking to show our rings...and many of them were purchased by FS...but...what about those that were passed on to us? Share them and their story Smiley smile Mine was passed on to me by my FS' side of the family. His mother who is passed wore it as well as his grandmother and his great grandmother. I absolutely love it. It has the look of an antique with 3 rows of 8 diamonds. I plan to use it as my wedding band as well and not add anything to it since FS' mother wore it that way too. I also plan to pass it down to our future child as well.

My first one is, my second one isn't. The pics are of my first one. Its and opal with small diamonds around it. While I do love it it's lost some of it's sparkle do to age and I'm really scared of chipping it.

My stone was passed down from my mother. My Father gave it to her in a different setting for their 15th wedding anniversary. When they got divorced my Mother hung on to it and after FH and I were only together for 4 months she gave it to him and just said... whenever you're ready. Two months later, he was ready and then we took it and got it reset.

I don't have any pics, but mine belonged to my great-grandmother (1912). It's an 18k white gold filigree design. I believe she was the only one to wear it. FS got it from my aunt...I didn't even know it existed.

My ring is an antique, so I'm sure there's history to it, but I don't know what it is! I love it though and I would love to pass it on to my future children.

I want to pass mine on. But I'm the first to wear it. We want to start traditions and heirlooms that we didn't get from our families!! I'll wear mine but it will probably be passed on to grandchildren/great grandchildren. It's got a classic feel to it I believe that will be timeless. Or so I hope Smiley smile

We didn't have engagement rings. However, the wedding ring NotFroofy gave me was inherited from her grandmother. I found her a matching one on eBay UK.

My e-ring was my maternal granmother's. I inherited it from her a decade ago (long before meeting FH). I held onto it for years, then a few years ago sized it to fit and began wearing it on my right hand (it's too pretty not to!). Then, once FH and I decided we would marry, I gave it to him to give back to me when he was ready to propose. He did, the day I moved in with him - in our bathroom. What a romantic! Ha!

Mine isn't an heirloom for me -- but I guess it was SOMEONE'S heirloom. The stone was cut in the 1870s, so it has been around for a while now. I didn't purchase it in its original setting though...it was purchased loose, and then put into a platinum setting by a jeweler in NY. I've posted photos of it in other threads -- the antique cuts are what I adore, they look so much different to the modern cushions and RBCs.

My ring is antique, the diamond is an old European cut. I have a family heirloom ring that my mom had inherited from an aunt that she used to wear on her right hand all the time and always wanted a ring like it for my engagement ring. I inherited it from my mom, but my fiance wanted to buy me a ring. So we found one that was very similar. The band on it was worn to a thread, so it must have been worn for a very long time and hopefully picked up years of happy marriage vibes. We had the band replaced, so now I have two antique diamond rings, one to pass down to each daughter!

My ring was FS grandmother's. I absolutely intend on passing it down. I love it.

My ring was worn by my paternal grandmother in it's current setting but before that it was inset in a man's ring which her husband/my paternal grandfather wore. When she died she passed the ring to my dad to keep for me (I was 6 months old when she died)

I wish there was something from either of our families, but sadly there isn't. Neither of our mothers have been married and the grandmother that I'm close to doesn't have anything from either of her marriages.

We plan on mine being passed down, that was part of how I could rationalize investing a bit more into it.

My diamond is from my grandmother's engagement ring. We were very, very close, and she died in November of 2008. She gave it to my FH in August, along with her blessing. I didn't know it until he proposed with it and told me what she said to him...I cried like an idiot. It was like she knew she wouldn't be here to see us get engaged but told him everything she'd want me to know when it finally happened.
