is unity sand tacky?

brandi, on June 29, 2011 at 10:25 AM Posted in Community Conversations 0 45

I found a keepsake unity sand set I like on the davids bridal website. You can have the names and date evgraved on the glass and I like it alot. My fiance had never heard of the unity sand before and when I brought it up he said he thought the whole idea of it was stupid and keeps calling it a 'sand art'. He likes the candle but says we can do whatever I want. What is everyone else's opinion???

I know a lot of people are doing it......but personally, I don't care for it. I'm trying to find something else to do. No candles for us since it's a beach wedding. Too much wind!

I actually love the unity sand. i've seen it done twice, and it looks beautiful sitting on the mantle or coffee table afterwards. (:

I am having an outside wedding as well but thats not why I like the sand. I like it because of the keepsake set and I would rather have something we can keep and sit out somewhere or whatever.

Tacky, no. Overdone, yes. To me, it's another thing to move when dusting/cleaning, and another thing to pack when/if I move. LOL While I don't care for them myself, I've never been PO'd to have to sit through it as a guest at other weddings, as long as it's not unity sand, then unity candle, then hand cleansing, then hand fasting, etc. You get the idea. Stick to one maybe two things that you find represent your relationship and union into matrimony, and don't go overboard. Smiley smile I think something like a sand ceremony works great for blending families.

This is what we're doing instead of the normal vase.

I'm honestly not a sand ceremony person - I find them a little hokey. I think the vows and ceremony cover the joining of two lives just beautifully. I think the vase is one of those things that winds up in the basement, or broken, sooner rather than later.

I agree with MuWA, it's not "tacky" but has been overdone. There are many types of unity ceremonies now-a-days. DH wants to do a unity wine ceremony so I'm trying to incorporate that.

Shannon, I don't particuallary care for it either, however since we're not doing a religious ceremony, I feel like we need something so that it's not less thna 5 minutes. I like the candle even less than the sand and I hate the way most of them look, so I found a sand set that my cat can't easily slaughter.

We're doing it. We wanted something to extend our ceremony, as we are not having a religious ceremony, so no readings. So we are doing the sand. But I'm a fan of it. I like the symbolism of it

Justine - Heh. My non-religious ceremony clocked in at SIX minutes because we added an affirmation of family and friends. In your face, Justine!

I do not think it is tacky, but I think it works better for outdoor ceremonies.

I'm doing it for my beach ceremony. I was surprised to hear it's been overdone because I've never been to a wedding where I've seen it. None of my friends had even heard of it. I'm really excited because it's a beautiful keepsake, and we're also going to mix in a little of our santa barbara sand, which is very meaningful to us.

I don't think it's tacky--probably because we're doing it!! He's from Boston and I'm from California, so we're combining sand from Cape Cod and San Diego to represent our families

We are doing it because we will be outside, and a unity candle probably won't stay lit. However, I don't plan on keeping the sand. It is for show only. Smiley smile

We are doing this as part of our reception, not part of our civil ceremony. I wanted to have a way that my kids could be involved if they wanted to be, and it will stay on the mantle of our home afterwards.

It's not tacky at all, yes I agree it's been done a lot but we are still doing one for our outdoor ceremony, we're not using a vase, we'll be using a frame rather

I'm personally not a fan of the sand... but to each their own. We are doing a unity cross. It's two pieces of a cross that we put together and it can still be part of the decor in our home.

I am doing it. I think part of the key is to get classier colors of sand. Like, not bright pink and bright green. I am going with tan and black or tan and dark brown.
